Pirates on a booty call?
They've come to The Phog to ball
But theyre going to take a fall
on another KANSAS basketball...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

Seton Hall alum and first year Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway brings his 4-3 charges to Allen Fieldhouse for this year's entry in the Big 12/Big East Battle in an attempt to do what four other Big East programs (St. John's, Creighton, Providence and Villanova) failed to do last season -- defeat our 7-1 defending National Champion KANSAS JAYHAWKS Men's Basketball team!

You will remember Coach Holloway, of course. Last year in the NCAA Tournament his St. Peter's Peacocks beat 2 seed Kentucky, 7 seed Murray State and 3 seed Purdue before finally falling to the eventual National Runner Up 8 seed tarred ones in the Elite Eight. Now he is back coaching his alma mater and hoping to continue his success for the Pirates.

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins 89.3% of the time, with the spread favoring KANSAS by 7.5 points.

(Somewhere in the wilderness of central Missouri...)

Here's our KANSAS JAYHAWK reporter on the scene at the hellmouth with a first hand description...

Darkness falls across the land,
an almost Winter tip at hand
and antlers crawl in search of blood
To terrorize the neighborhood!

And whosoever shall be found
With the KU soul -- get down! --
Must stand and face the Hellmouth Hounds
And hope Hawk shots are going down!

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of one hundred sixty eight years
And tigger ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal their doom.

So our lads fight to stay alive
And your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the Thriller!

It's another KANSAS basketball...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!
(to Vincent Price a grateful tip of the hat for his immortal "Thriller" rap!)

Yes, it begins in the daylight, but night will fall as the game is balled, and our Crimson and Blue lads will fight to emerge victorious from the hellish landscape.

I honestly do not pay much attention to mOO since they decided to leave the Big 12. Good riddance as far as I am concerned. But occasionally I must dip my toes into the foul muck and grime as I do tonight (if only it were the last time).

I didn't even know they have a new head coach, one Dennis Gates, hired from Cleveland State after finishing his last two seasons in a tie for first in the Horizon League, oh my!

As is always the case in a mOO zoo game,
the records are often naught but a frame
for a bout that is tooth and nail hell bent for leather
and the best guns of that day have the best chance to weather
the storm that ensues in that mOO zoo theater.

KANSAS versus Missouri History as of 2022-12-08
	WINS	HW	RW	NW
KANSAS	174	90	65	19 (18 KC, 1 Dallas; AFH 44-14)
mOO 95	55	33 7 (6 KC, 1 Dallas; mOO Arena 4-4 )
Games	269

NB: 2022-12-14 -- My original posted records were incorrect -- but so were the numbers reported by
KU Communications in the pregame GAME NOTES. Since that discovery I have scrubbed 4 different data sets (one courteously
provided by CorpusJayhawk -- thank you, sir!) and the table above reflects the results. And yes, I am
going to be contacting KU Communications with these results. If I missed something, it's because it
was not in any of the data sets I analyzed, which includes the record reported in the KANSAS MEN'S
BASKETBALL 2021-22 MEDIA GUIDE - HE.
You will note from the above that our Jayhawks have a winning record against the foe regardless of game site.
KANSAS against mOO is
90-33 in Lawrence (44-14 in The Phog)
19-7 in games held at neutral sites (all conference tournaments),
and -- most importantly for Saturday's game --
65-55 in the lair of the enemy.
(NB: also edited in line with the above noted edit -- HE)

Ok, you say, but this year mOO has started out 9 and Oh and certainly must be a dangerous foe, yes?

They clearly are better than years past, but how much weight or worry should we put in that 9-0 record?

Let's borrow some of CorpusJayhawk's DPPI data to try to address that question.

Davis Power Predictor Index data as of 2022-12-04 for KANSAS and mOO
			SOS	OFF	DEF TOP50
Rank	Rating	Team	Rank	Rank	Rank	W L HW HL	RW RL	NW NL W L
26	81.123	Kansas	61	18	42	8 1 5 0 0 0 3 1 2 1
68	76.413	mOO	328	17	185	9 0 8 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

Yes, the enemy is 9-0 coming into this game, but they have played Eight ( 8 ) home games and NO ONE in the Top 50 until this game.
They are overall ranked #68 in the DPPI, which is AMAZING given their #328 ranking (out of 363 total Div 1 programs) for their Strength of Schedule.

Even Wichita State, normally a worthy opponent and who did go to overtime against them in Wichita, is just 4-4 and ranked 98 in the DPPI as of the data date.

Check out the enemy’s competition to date for yourself...
   					 DPPI	OFF	DEF
OPPONENT SCORE RANK	RANK	RANK
vs Southern Indiana W 97-91 223	214	183
vs Pennsylvania W 92-85 179	128	239

vs Coastal Carolina W 89-51 246	278	180
vs Houston Christian W105-69 350	334	352
@ Wichita State W 88-84OT 98	182 52
vs Southeast Missouri State	W 96-89 186	214	183
vs KANSAS ?????? 26 18 42
I like our Jayhawks' chances!

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins 57.1% of the time. The spread is not yet available as I post this, but I figure just because it is against the evil ones in the hellmouth it will be less than 5 points.

Indiana wants me.
Lord, I can't go back there.
Indiana wants me.
Lord, I can't go back there.
Because you know it's true
I'm A Jayhawk, through and through.

And the Hoosiers are in play
Up at Lawrence on the Kaw on another...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

In his Rock Chalk Challenge newsletter on Saturday's game, CorpusJayhawk noted that with Duke, Indiana and UK in the regular season, KU just needs to beat them (1 down, 2 to go), then meet and beat UNC and UCLA in the postseason to "hit for the cycle" this season -- the blue blood cycle, that is... the 5 teams that have more NCAA Tournament titles than Ol' KU. Here's hoping Saturday completes the second phase of that five phase cycle.

Our #8 Jayhawks (9-1, 5-0 home) face the #14 Hoosiers (8-2, 1-1 Away) of Bloomington, Indiana.
I may have spent a year postgrad at IU back in the Year of the Chair (1985), but I'm A Jayhawk through and through and still kinda begrudge the fact that it's Branch McCracken's Hoosiers that kept Phog from having a 3-0 record in NCAA Tournament title games. IU leads the series 8-6, and the very first two meetings were in the 1942 and 1953 NC title games pitting Branch's boys against Phog's Jayhawks.

Here's to our Boys in Crimson and Blue winning one for Phog and closing in on evening up that series record!

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KU wins 59.7% of the time, with KANSAS favored in the game by 6 points.

CorpusJayhawk's DPPI prediction is similar -- KU favored to win 63.4% of the time, with a 4.6 points spread.

Fight fiercely, Harvard!
Fight, fight, fight!
Demonstrate to them our skill
Albeit they possess the might
Nonetheless we have the will!

How we shall celebrate our victory
We shall invite the whole team up for tea
(How jolly!)
[Hurl that orb through the iron ring,] and
Fight, fight, fight!

Fight fiercely, Harvard!
Fight, fight, fight!
Impress them with our prowess, do!
Oh, fellows, do not let the crimson down
Be of stout heart and true.

Come on, chaps, fight for Harvard's glorious name
Won't it be peachy --
if we win the game?
Let's try not to injure them, but
Fight, fight, fight!
(Let's not be rough though)
And do fight fiercely!
Fight, fight, fight!

Sorry, Tom Lehrer ,
but to our Jayhawk fans delight
Your Crimson comes into THE PHOG
on another KANSAS basketball...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

I have read that several early KU faculty were Harvard and Yale grads (more of that New England influence on the founding of both the state of Kansas and Kansas University), so when the final decision was made on what the school colors should be, those worthies -- because they could not reach agreement otherwise -- landed on Crimson (Harvard) *and* Blue (Yale). (I have also read there was much discussion — okay, argument — on the the merits of Maize & Gold from the faculty with University of Michigan degrees, but I digress). You might think that with such a history, there might also be a history of competition between our programs on the hardwood, but (see the follow-on post for explanation of this strikeout - HE).

CorpusJayhawk tells me KU has played Harvard just once (2016 in AFH, KU 75 Harvard 69) and Yale thrice ( 2007 W 86–53, 2006 W 87–46 and 1975 W 63-54, all AFH wins for KU). (NB: KANSAS is 16-0 all-time against Ivy League programs.)

SO what is there to say about the Hahvahd Crimson men's basketball program ? For that is their team name, the Crimson. They are located in Boston, of course, and have been playing men's basketball since the 1900-01 season (112 years). The program has an overall losing record (1195-1355 .469 W-L%), but have done considerably better in the 16 seasons that Tommy Amaker has helmed the program (2007-08 - present, 272-156 .636 W-L%). Before Amaker the Crimson had made the NCAA Tournament just once, all the way back in 1946. Under Amaker they made The Dance four straight years from 2012-2015, but not since. So far this year they are 8-4, and even more interestingly 4-1 away from home.

Meanwhile our 10-1 Jayhawks to date are 8-1 against opponents with a winning record, and 6-0 in The Phog.

So once again I like our Jayhawks' chances!

And so does CorpusJayhawk's DPPI projection: KU wins 90.1% of the time, and the margin a whopping 23 points in the favor of KANSAS!

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins 97.3% of the time, with KANSAS favored by 21.5 points.

An edit to the Harvard v KANSAS post —

I had not read about the origins of our colors in years, and I wrote about what I knew — which today I have learned was a well propagated myth! To wit -
“… by the end of the autumn of 1896, crimson and blue had become the University’s official athletic colors. Since they happened to be the combined colors of Harvard and Yale, a myth arose that crimson and blue were chosen to assuage the Yale alums among KU’s faculty who had endured a difficult time embracing the hues of their alma mater’s chief rival.”

Here’s the link to the official history, provided by Mark D. Hersey, Department of History, University of Kansas.

Yellow & Blue?

Hmmm…

KANSAS opens the Big 12 at home.
That ol' home cookin' tastes good to the bone.

But the Self Alma Mater will be the foe,
And for him that is always a tough row to hoe.

But our Jayhawks are playing better each day
Or at least it seems to be that way.

It's conference time now, time to make hay
Up at Lawrence on the Kaw on another...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Yep, it's Big 12 Conference time, and KANSAS -- both the #4 Men (11-1) and the #22 Women (10-1) -- are starting their conference play against Oklahoma State. The Gentleman Jayhawks host the Pokes (8-4) at 1 PM on CBS while the Lady Jayhawks, after suffering their first loss of the season in their last outing (a 3OT loss at Nebraska), have traveled to Stillwater to take on the Cowgirls (10-2) in Gallagher-Iba Arena at 4 PM CT on ESPN+/Big XII Now.

Looking forward to chanting ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK KU! in victory in both venues.

Except for the Kentucky game on January 28, KANSAS plays the folks that know them best for the rest of this regular season. And both asteroid and CorpusJayhawk are predicting it's going to be a killer, with the Big 12 champ likely to be crowned with as few as 11 (Corpus) or 12 (asteroid) wins out of 18 games. Simply put, the Big 12 this season looks to be the best men's hoops conference in Division 1 (all 10 teams are in the Top 52 of Kenpom rankings, and the DPPI has 8 of the 10 in the Top 42 teams; the Big 12 leads the field in the DPPI with a rating of .720, runner up B1G coming in at .673). We should not be surprised if they beat up on each other to the max! (Notably, KANSAS is in the running for all the marbles in both their projections!) Here is an except lifted from Corpus' pregame email for the Rock Chalk Challenge folks...

Every computer algorithm has the Big 12 as the toughest conference in the country. That in itself is not unusual, in fact, the Big 12 has been the best conference for pretty much the last 8 years. What is unprecedented is the degree of parity in the conference. When you look at the composite of 50 computer rankings here are where the Big 12 teams rank (with my DPPI rankings in parentheses);

3 Kansas (6)
9 Texas (9)
13 Baylor (19)
14 West Virginia (14)
29 Kansas St. (32)
35 Iowa St. (31)
39 Oklahoma (34)
42 TCU (61)
44 Texas Tech (56)
47 Oklahoma St. (28)

That is crazy parity ...
There is no day off in the Big 12.
Every game is going to be a grind.
I have not seen anything like this since I have been tracking this data.
Buckle your seatbelts.

KANSAS leads the series 121-60 (51-10 in AFH) [Self 24-11]
Lawrence (AFH) 66-12 (51-10) [Self 13-2]
Stillwater (GIA) 39-36 (37-36) [Self 7-8]
Neutral Sites 16-12 [Self 4-1]
Big 12 T (T-Mobile Center) 6-2 (3-0) [Self 4-1; L 2005, W 4 straight since]
KANSAS has won the last three meetings, winning 76-62 last time out... in The Phog
last Feb 14

As you can tell from the above, The Phog is a real panacea for all that ails Coach Self when it comes to playing OK State. That 13-2 looks real sweet. But away?

Self has winning road records in every Big 12 arena except for Gallagher-Iba Arena (7-8, .467) and the WVU Coliseum (4-6, .400).

SO glad our Jayhawks are starting conference play at home in The Phog!

Here's to our Boys in Crimson and Blue starting off the conference season on the right foot with a Phogging of the Pokes!!

The ESPN pregame Matchup Predictor says KU wins 74.2% of the time, with KANSAS favored in the game by 10 points.

CorpusJayhawk's DPPI prediction -- KU favored to win 73.7% of the time, with a 8.3 points spread.

KANSAS 69, OKSt 67

Kansas has won a mind-boggling 32 straight conference openers dating back to the 1991-92 season, with 13 of those at home in Allen Fieldhouse and 19 on the road. The last time Kansas lost a league opener was at Oklahoma, 88-82, on Jan. 8, 1991.

It's on the road to Lubbock for another KANSAS basketball...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

The Big 12 is projected to be the best conference in D1 Men's College Basketball.
Well, that's nothing new, you say, that's been the case for the past 8 years or so. So why should we worry, you ask, how good is everybody else, you ask?

Per Coach Self: “This league is a monster. We played other teams that are predicted to go to the tournament and Oklahoma State is as good or better than most of those teams.”

Konza63 provided me with these tidbits...
kenpom.com: “All 10 teams rank inside the top-46 in KenPom.com's adjusted defensive efficiency, with six squads sitting No. 22 or better on that end of the floor. It is too early to think about March, but every team is currently listed in the NCAA Tournament in Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology projections.”
and
Full tweet text --
"There are 362 basketball teams in Division I. Per ESPN BPI, the 10 toughest remaining schedules belong to...
Every team in the Big 12  "

And both CorpusJayhawk and asteroid have been warning us that this conference season was going to be a meat grinder.

For this game, CorpusJayhawk's DPPI projection has it as a toss up, with Tech favored by a fraction of a point.

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins just 41.8% of the time. There was no spread data available as of post time.

Almost heaven - Lawrence, Kansas
Golden valley, smiling people walking down Mass.
KU skyline backlit by the sun
Kansas Jayhawks hoopsters have got foes on the run.

There's country roads and highways, too
Traveled by the faithful, Crimson & Blue,
Kansas Jayhawks are the home team, but
they're on another country road ... to Morgantown... for another KANSAS...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

Man, you think the Big 12 has been tough in the past?
Whoa Nellie! Check this out!
After the first two conference games of the season, we have...

2-0
KU (W @TT)!
KSU (W @tu)!!!
ISU (W @OU)!!
TCU (W @BU)!

0-2
BU ??
TT ??
WVU
OU

1-1
OSU
tu

Wow, look at those road wins!
asteroid's projections indicated maybe two, and there were four in that group, all by "underdog" teams!
(Yes, even KU was the 'dog in Lubbock, with Tech HC Mark Adams sporting a 29-0 home record before Saturday's game.)

It seems pretty obvious to this Jayhawk that this year them dogs can BITE and bite hard!

Thankfully Coach Self's KANSAS teams have excelled at winning on the road, winning 67.7% of their games (see Self's complete Big 12 road record later on in this post).

But Coach Self's fantastic Big 12 road record was NOT forged in the fires of the West Virginia University Coliseum.

During his KANSAS career Self teams have played the Mountaineers 24 times, with an overall record of 18-6.
10-0 AFH
4-0 Neutral
4-6 WVU Coliseum

Yep, all 6 Ls have been in Morgantown, although WVU almost got the gold ring back on February 13, 2017, when Frank Mason III, Devonté Graham and their KANSAS JAYHAWKS teammates roared back in the second half to tie the game at 71 all in regulation before going on to win it in overtime 84-80!
ESPN story
Youtube: full game
Youtube: 8 minute highlights version for those who can't sit through almost 2 hours of Dick Vitale :P

Konza63 and HawkErrant in AFH for WVU at KU, February 13, 2017.
KU 84, WVU 80 (OT) Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

And yes, IIRC that first photo was taken before that game while we were still sane, as we were crazy -- and hoarse -- by the end!

But enough of the past, especially since this game is in Morgantown, where WVU has had the upper hand, although the two programs have split their last 6 meetings there 3-3.

With WVU off to a bad start after two road losses to open their Big 12 season, you know they are aching for a W. But with their starting point guard Kedrian Johnson not playing in their Big 12 home opener due to a concussion, one has to figure KU stands a really good chance of getting W5 out of 11 games in Morgantown on Saturday.

For this game, CorpusJayhawk's DPPI projection -- well, CJ and his esposa are out of the loop for a while. so I won't have access to his projections. But in his pregame email he thought KU by 2.

asteroid is projecting a KU win 70-68 (link)

I read that kenpom favors KANSAS by 1.

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins just 38.8% of the time, but the spread favors KU by 1.5 points (perhaps because Kedrian Johnson is out?)

Yep, the three teams atop the Big 12 are all at home as they strive to go 4-0.
And two of the three teams at the bottom are on the road. And 4 of the 5 are favored to win… unless you prefer asteroid’s prediction, which has all the home teams winning on Tuesday and Wednesday. But really, the way this season has been so far, would you bet on the latter? Hmmm...

For this game, CorpusJayhawk's DPPI projection is KU 73-63 | 78% probability of winning.

Kenpom favors KANSAS 71-62 | 81%.
(And by the way for you long range NCAA Tournament watchers, as of Monday January 9 Kenpom rates KANSAS as having the #8 Adjusted Offense and the #10 Adjusted Defense. Very favorable for tournament success if KU continues to perform at that level.)

asteroid predicts KU 68-59 (UPDATED: 72-62 in game day prediction) … and
KSU 68 OSU 65
ISU 63 TTU 59
tu 74 TCU 66

The Cyclones come a roaring in with rain and fire and hail,
But those Jayhawks know how to fly high amidst the mighty gale!

So don’t you worry, KANSAS fans, Jayhawks will have their sway as we count the minutes ‘til it’s time for another KANSAS...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!

KANSAS, ISU and KState (who plays at TCU) are all 4-0 atop the Big 12, but at the end of Saturdary one, and hopefully two of them will no longer have a goose egg in their loss columns. Here’s hoping our Jayhawks finish the day 5-0 at the top of the Big 12!

GET UP! you KANSAS fans!
Our 'Hawks have not yet begun to fight!
So get ready! Get Set! The time is here for another KANSAS...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

KANSAS (16-1, 5-0) finds itself all alone atop the Big 12 as of last Saturday after beating ISU (13-3, 4-1) in The Phog and KState (15-2, 4-1) losing to TCU (14-3, 3-2) on the road in Fort Worth. Texas (15-2, 4-1) beat Tech (10-7, 0-5) in Austin to join the 3-way logjam in second place and TCU finds itself all alone in 5th place to fill out the top half of the conference. Both the Red Raiders and the Mountaineers remain winless in conference.

Next up for KANSAS is in-state rival Kansas State. With first year head coach Jerome Tang revitalzing the program, the Ag & Vet School will be looking to change some things in their relationship with KU and do their dadgum darnedest to bring our Jayhawks back to the rest of the pack.. I also note that in an effort to keep pace the Cyclones will be looking to bust some Bevo butt in Hilton on the same night! And can Tech finally get a Big 12 W hosting Baylor? I'm hoping so!

(The two programs have yet to meet in the “T-Mobile” Center)

BILL SELF’S KANSAS RECORD vs KSt AY2003-04 to present
Total	38-6 .864
AFH	18-1 .947
BC	14-5 .737
NEU 6-0 1.00 (Kemper 1-0; Ford Center, OKC 1-0; Sprint Center 4-0)

No CorpusJayhawk or asteroid game day projections as I write this, so on to the others.

Kenpom favors KANSAS 75-73 | 57%.
KANSAS Adjusted Offense #13 | Adjusted Defense #12. Solid.
For comparison, KState is AdjO #37 | AdjD #40.

asteroid’s Round 5 Big 12 Projection predicts
KU 74 KSU 71
ISU 66 UT 64
BU 73 TTU 72
OSU 63 OU 60
WVU 74 TCU 71

Two very tough road wins predicted, KU and BU. I thnk two road wins is a good bet, but personally I think Tech is going to finally get one at home, while WVU, with its absolutely worst in conference free throw shooting (at least that's what I heard the talking heads say last WVU game when they were missing left and right), will fall victim to a really solid TCU team, even though they are playing in Morgantown. Pomeroy has a "Luck" rating built into his programming, and WVU ranks 349 out of 363 for that metric! So I'm going with the Frogs.

The ESPN pregame matchup predictor says KANSAS wins 54.5% of the time, the point projection for this game being 74-72.

NB: Kansas is celebrating 125 years of men’s basketball in AY2022-23!
And SATURDAY’S GAME saw all the living KU head coaches past and present (Ted Owens, Larry Brown, Roy Williams and our Bill) in The Phog to celebrate, along with many players from their stints at KU. And Walt Wesley, who from what I could tell was the "elder statesman" of the attendees, actually started with former KU head coach Dick Harp, who has been coaching on the Celestial All-Stars bench these past 12 years. I've looked around for a list of which players came, but apparently there was not a media release listing who made it. But from all accounts it was a great day, especially as our Jayhawks managed to win the game so as to not spoil the celebration! Here's a couple of links to relive the weekend party.
