Possession analysis

"We didn’t play that bad early, we just had some careless turnovers. I think of the first ten possessions, we had four turnovers, and the majority of those were unforced. We missed some bunnies, and balls didn’t bounce our way, so it’s pretty tight early (16-14). Then we played pretty well during a stretch. We got to halftime okay, but not great. And then we came out in the second half and laid an egg for the first four or five minutes. Give them credit. It was a 20-point game, and they hung in there. When they have a big man who can shoot it, and you’re playing two big guys and trying to play man, then that can pose some problems.

"We can guard the ball screens different, which we will. But we’re teaching them the hard way to do it right now, so that way it will be a lot easier for them when we make some adjustments. But there were some good things. We were careless early, but did a better job of taking care of the basketball in the second half. We can play better. And the other thing we’ve got to do is we’ve got to make some shots. You shoot 62% this game. We shot 71% in the second half of the last game. So for the last 60 minutes we’ve probably shot about 65%, but we are three of 16 or 17 from three. You’re not going to win consistently if you don’t make shots, and we’ve got better shooters than what we’re shooting it right now.

"Obviously, we’re better offensively with Keith (Langford) in the game. But I think Jeff Hawkins played the best of the other perimeter players. J.R. Giddens is coming. JR is starting to figure it out some. But I’d say right now Jeff is playing more consistently than the other guys on the perimeter, except for Keith and Aaron (Miles).

"(Wayne Simien) got some easy baskets, but he also made some jump shots, and that’s good. When he and David (Padgett) sit out there and make jump shots, that’ll open up another guy inside a lot. One thing our big guys did do a better job of was sealing. Even though that was a small team (PSU), we were able to get several easy baskets by pounding it inside. But in order to do that, you’ve got to have people respect you. They backed off of ‘Dub a couple of times, and he made ‘em pay. They backed off of David a couple of times, and he made ‘em pay. I’m excited about that. We’ll have much better high-low type action when those guys can knock down jumpers.

"There’s four important segments to a basketball game. The first five minutes sets the tone for the whole first half. And, of course, the last five minutes of the first half sets the tone for the start of the second half. Then the first five of the second half, and the most important five are the last five because mistakes are magnified because there isn’t time to come back from a mistake. I think it’s real important to finish halves right, and I think we did a decent job of that. But there’s so many things that come up during a game that we haven’t even talked about yet as a team. So hopefully in the next two or three weeks we’ll get everybody on the same page in that regard."
