Roy Williams - "Their outside shooting was a breakdown in our defense, to be honest with you. They started shooting the three-point shots, and after they'd made two of their first three we talked about getting out and making a guy put it on the floor and not allowing him the open looks at it. I'm still saying that the last timeout of the game, because we still didn't do what we needed to do at that point. But I congratulate San Diego. They came in and had a game plan. It was good, and they stuck with it, and they made those outside shots. I'm not one of those guys who's in love with the three-point shot, particularly if it's covered. We did get out on it a couple of times, and they still made them. In that situation you've got to get out on people and meke them put it on the floor and see if they can do some other things, and we didn't do that.

"Got a little sloppy early in the second half. In fact I think we turned it over four of our first six possessions in the second half, and that's after our defense had given us a big lift in the first half of the basketball game. C.B., B.J., Billy, Nick, T.J., those guys gave us a lift defensively every time they came in. And with a 12 point lead at the half, you'd think you could come out and have that same type of intensity in the second half, but offensively we just kind of stunk it up.

"Everybody was concerned because you come back and they say you're going to have a letdown after winning at Maui and before you play Cincinnati, and I think that's a bunch of garbage. You got to be able to play, and you got to be able to play every night. I have yet to go out on a golf course in my entire life not wanting to do the best I could possibly do. But this was not the kind of performance I think you get a lot better from. Now we've learned some things, and we did some things execution-wise at the end. We put Nick at the point there in the last minute just in case Ryan gets in foul trouble or something and I don't have him. I'm really confident in Ryan and know that he wouuld do a good job. But we got Nick the ball, and he did the right thing. But then he goes to the free throw line and missed the free throw. So hopefully, those things will help us out later on.

"I was pleased when you look at the shooting percentage, but still we've got to get more shots, fewer turnovers, and if we do that that'll help us. Then try to eliminate the reboundnig that they did. I mean, at the half we had a one rebound edge, and at the end we had a seven rebound edge. But we're much bigger than that team is, and we should outrebound them a lot better.

"I think this is a much better San Diego team than a year ago. Their second-leading scorer last year is being red-shirted, at least two and maybe three of the kids who started for them last year have been beaten out by other youngsters. Brad's (Holland) got a team that he likes and a group of youngsters he likes that are doing what he wants them to do, and I think they're going to have a good year.

"We're going to try to learn from this one at least until midnight and have a good practice tomorrow. Then we'll really start focussing on Cincinnati on Tuesday. It is going to be a big game, but you get a chance to play a lot of them if you come here. And we do try to play a tough schedule, and this is just one of those. We're playing nine games in the first 23 days, so it's a little bit of a tough stretch, but it's a lot of fun playing those types of games."

USD coach Brad Holland - "We feel like we have a team that can shoot the threes. We didn't show it in our first two games, though.

"If not for our problems in the first half, the score might have been even closer. I told the team we played 35 minutes together, but those last five minutes were so disjointed.

"We went into the half down 12 instead of what I thought could have been three or four.

"This is the kind of game where you can get blown out by 30 or play pretty well and feel pretty good."
