Roy Williams - I don't know that we played exceptionally well by any means, but we were playing a very good basketball team that was a little wounded without a couple of their players, and I really thought Utah did an outstanding job of trying to do things that really bother us. Particularly when Doleac got in foul trouble, then they went with a much smaller lineup, caused us some problems chasing all those guys around the screens. I really think it was a typical opener. We weren't as sharp as we wanted to be, but give Utah some credit for causing some of that.

"One of the things we wanted to do, particularly with Keith Van Horn because he is such a good player - he shot 55% last year from the field - we wanted to cut down on his percentage, and he was 6-16. He got to the fould line a lot more than we wanted him to because we gave him 10 free throws, but we did make some big shots. Billy (Thomas) made a big three for us, Jerod made a couple in there, TJ (Pugh) got a rebound and put it back in, BJ got a tap.... You can go down the line and we had a lot of guys who helped us today.

"We shot 38% for the game, so we were pretty cold the whole game. We weren't in sync, and again, I think that's the kind of thing you're gonna see the first game of the season.

"If we had played St. Mary's Sisters of the Blind today we might have won by 50, but we wouldn't have learned as much about our basketball team as we learned today."

Utah coach Rick Majerus - "Yeah, I got my barbeque. That was the only good thing about the trip.

"I'd have to look at the films to see what led to Keith's demise. I don't know whether it was Kansas or whether he was tired. Maybe I can't play Keith as many minutes as he's playing. He looked tired.

"We're not to the point where we can exploit other teams too much. We're playing the game out of sync because of the situation back home. (Starting guard Brandon Jessie is sitting out seven games on an NCAA suspension for taking money and gifts from an agent while in JUCO. Reserve center Ben Melmeth is out two games on an academic suspension.)

"We've got to play six more games with fragmented lineups. We're in a scramble situation. And I think when Vaughn went out (with foul trouble), they stepped it up defensively.

"Kansas is good. They're a Final Four team. That's what they are. There are really no flaws in Kansas, not too many chinks in their armor.

"We outrebounded them (sic), but the guy who stung us on the boards was Pierce. He ran down a lot of long rebounds. They abused us at the number three spot."
