Possession analysis

"I thought we were pretty efficient. The first four possessions were perfect possessions. We came away with six points and a wide-open miss. But I thought early on they (CU) played pretty well. They were up 10-8 at the first TV timeout. Then we kicked in defensively and basically shut them out. Our guys did a good job and showed some toughness bouncing back from a disappointing loss. So I was pleased with the way we played. That was probably the best first half in terms of being efficient that we’ve had all year.

"People who understand basketball know that when Harrison was in the game and he wasn’t in foul trouble, they were good. But David and Jeff gave themselves up to make sure that Harrison wasn’t in the game. You don’t ever want your guys to get in foul trouble, but that was a great trade-off for us, because our bench came in and performed very well the first half. That’s the best our bench has played in a long while in the first half also.

"I just wish we had finished the game differently, because the score is not indicative of how the game was. That was a 30-35 point game, and we end up winning by 21. Still a lot of things to work on. We were careless early, and we’ve got to make our free throws, and that has been our Achilles heel the last couple of weeks. But Mike Lee getting eight rebounds and six assists and seven points in 15 minutes was excellent. And I thought Wayne was a great presence. To get 15 rebounds in any game is quite an accomplishment.

"We did a good job defensively. And they missed shots, and we understand that. But when you guard them, even the open shots feel like they’re somewhat guarded. We did a good job defensively and we ran pretty well. We didn’t run quite as well as we did the other night against Richmond, but when you control the glass like we did you have an opportunity to run, and we did a much better job in that area than we did prior to Christmas. So it’s coming. Even though the Richmond loss was so disappointing, we still played a lot better in that game than we did against A&M and K-State. We just didn’t finish. We’ve got to put the entire 40 minutes together starting right now because the season is really beginning.

"The intensity level was average. We were gassed at the first TV timeout, so I didn’t know if we’d be able to sustain it, but Mike and Jeff Hawkins came in and gave us a great spark. Bryant Nash and Christian did a good job off the bench early. The first half was good, and the first five minutes of the second half our guys left their energy back in the locker room. Then we kinda got it going and made a couple of shots and looked pretty fluid. It was a good win, and a win we didn’t have to... not to take anything away from Colorado... but it wasn’t a taxing win. So hopefully we’ll be able to have good workouts tomorrow and Tuesday, and get ready to go to Manhattan."
