| "I hope people leave here understanding that sometimes
other teams play well and sometimes your team is not at full
strength, and we weren't close to full strength. You've got David
out, you've got Aaron playing on one leg, and you've got Keith who
is visibly not feeling well at all. Then JR had an off night by JR's
standards. But it was a great win. K-State played great. They
kicked our butt on the glass. We knew that was their biggest
strength, and they definitely came in and did what they were
supposed to do on the boards. But we had some guys step up and
play pretty well, and of course Mike Lee was terrific.
"He got off to such a great start, making his first couple. And the kid's got guts. He played well, and you can tell we will be a different team when JR is playing the way he's capable of playing and shooting the ball, and we get David back. I can see us having a nice rotation. We did some good things, but we were slow defensively. When Aaron, your best defender, is unable to get out and guard, and Keith doesn't feel well, and then JR doesn't have a great night.... We were slow defensively and we didn't rebound well, but I thought we executed very well offensively. We got great shots. We executed out of timeouts well and got some good baskets when the game was on the line. And we needed to play a game that was close, so this was good for us. "I told our guys after the game, if you shoot free throws the way we have been shooting them, you win by 15 and everybody thinks you played so well. But we didn't shoot free throws well. It's one thing if you don't shoot them well in general, but we are a very good free throw shooting team, and tonight they just didn't go in, and we were fortunate that it didn't come back to haunt us too much. "With David out, you know their game plan is to go right at Wayne and Jeff. In a rivalry game, you know they're going to call it closer early. At least, that's what we thought. We can't trap the post against them because they post in the mid-post area. And to be honest with you, the last couple of days Jeff hasn't played quite as well as Bryant. Bryant has been a high-energy guy the past couple of days, and I thought defensively we needed some energy. So that's why we started Bryant, and it worked out fine because I thought one of the keys to the game was to have both Dub and Jeff in the last seven minutes of the game. "Jeff played very well, and we need him to play well. With David out, who knows if David will be able to go on Saturday.... My personal opinion is it's doubtful, although he says he's feeling a lot better. We'll let the doctors make that determination on Friday. But if you take away Bryant's missed shots... I thought Bryant played really well; he just couldn't get one to go down. "They played better than they have in past years, and we probably didn't play quite as well as we have in past years. We had a chance to blow the game open. Mike missed a layup when we're up seven, and instead of a nine-point lead it turns into a four-point lead at halftime because they throw in one at the buzzer. That's basketball. Sometimes you do the right thing and it still doesn't work out. Certainly we had our fair share of things happening that didn't go our way, but our guys hung in there and responded." |
