Season summary

"We played a lot smarter in the second half and played with a lot more intensity than we did in the first half. It was a strange first half, because for the first six or seven minutes we held them to three or four points. Wwe were sensational defensively, and then all of a sudden we quit playing. And at the same time we're getting it inside on offense and trying to get them in foul trouble, wich was part of our game plan. And yet we're going to the free throw line and missing every free throw.

"Their team is more of a perimeter shooting team, and our goal was to try to get it inside and get to the free throw line more often, and we did. But at the same time if you're not going to make them, it's not going to help you as much. We were 10-24 or something like that in the first half, and you can't win basketball games doing it like that if you do it for the entire game.

"In the second half we were able to turn up the intensity. Steve and Jacque hit Richard twice in a row on fast breakes. and we did continue to get it inside, and we still got fouled. But this time we were able to go to the free throw line and make the free throws.

"But the whole story of the game was our defensive play. We got them to turn it over, and I also think they didn't shoot a real good percentage.

"My annual complaint: Steve Woodberry last night has six assists and zero turnovers, 14 points. Tonight he has 12 points, and he was our defensive player of the game last night. Tonight in the second half, he may have played the best defensive game I've ever seen a perimeter player play at Kansas. Go back and look at the stats, and with the exception of Damon Bailey, nobody who has ever played against Steve has ever had a good night. Steve Woodberrry needed to be there on the all-tournament team.

"We'll give them tomorrow off, but we may practice seven times a day between now and our next game."
