DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

AND our Jayhawks are perched at the top of the leaderboard for All-Time Winningest D1 Programs, having passed Kentucky during the 2022 NCAA Tournament (now up 4 on the Wildcats) and extending their lead on UNC (now 34) and Duke (111).

THANK YOU! and CONGRATULATIONS!! to the SAINT PETER'S PEACOCKS for the assist!

The AY2021-22 thread can be found here. (NB: a worksheet error resulted in incorrect All-Time LOST #s for all 6 teams all season long. The last entry in the AY2021-22 thread adjusts those #s to show the correct LOST totals for all teams as of 2022-04-04. BUT also note that the NCAA AY2022-23 Division 1 Men's Basketball Records Book shows that the NCAA made some offseason adjustments to Temple's All Time record (-1 W and +2 Ls) to reflect the 1961-1121 record shown below.)

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
start the AY2022-23 season off with their 50th straight Home Opener Win (a record that stretches back to AY1973-74 and includes head coaches Ted Owens, Larry Brown, Roy Williams, Bill Self... and acting HC Norm Roberts!!!) The Omaha Mavericks were the competition beaten in order for KANSAS to keep pace with UK, UNC, Duke, and Syracuse. Temple was the only one of the Top 6 to open their season with an L.

FWIW, I continue to keep Syracuse on the list for several reasons.

1. Regardless of NCAA rulings, Syracuse is only the 5th program to win over 2000 games. The Orange would be 96 games ahead of the Owls and 101 ahead of UCLA but for the 101 vacated wins. (I would not be at all surprised to see UCLA [as of 2022-11-20 3-2 this AY and W1958, L884 all time, tied with the Orange for official wins] pass both Syracuse and Temple in the official standings in AY2022-23).

2. I am NOT saying those Syracuse wins should not have been vacated. Given the information we know, I believe more games should have been vacated, including the entire 2003 season and National Championship. That the NCAA stopped short of stripping that away from the Orange is disgraceful.

3. And in light of the punishment dealt to Syracuse, I find it also disgraceful that UNC was not only not heavily hit for using academically ineligible players, but skated completely as far as the NCAA is concerned despite its documented 18 years of academic fraud.

4. All of the above serve as a continuing reminder of the corruptness, ineptness, pettiness and ineffectiveness of the NCAA.

As a matter of note, if the Bruins do pass Syracuse and Temple this AY, I am considering future versions of this to only include the top 4 programs that officially have 2000 wins or more, with Syracuse as a footnote instead of in the table itself. Or I may just go with a Top 4 tracker until a 5th program is within 100 wins of the #4 program.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 8-1. Since the last update UK has won 2 games, UNC lost it's last two for 4 Ls in a row (with Bacot injured and out for the last two), and Duke bounced back from being crushed by Purdue to take its next 2 games. Meanwhile, Temple won 2, the Orange went 1-1 and UCLA improved to 7-2 so far this season and passed Syracuse for 6th place in the list. The Bruins seem to be a good bet to pass Temple as well for the 5 spot by the end of AY2022-23. Something else to keep an eye on as the year progresses.

Linking my earlier post on this into the ATWP thread for future reference.

Also includes my reasoning for changing the ATWP reporting criteria and formatting.

RCB - UCLA has a shot at being #5 all time wins by sesason end

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 12-1. Since the last update KU was 1-0, UK was 1-1, UNC was 0-1, Duke was 1-0, Temple was 2-0, UCLA was 2-0 and Syracuse was 1-0. Indiana was 1-0 recording Win #1900 in program history, and UConn won one but then suffered its first loss of the season.

I have decided at least for now to expand the tracker to the Top 10 since it means adding just 2 more teams -- Notre Dame and St. John's -- as I am already tracking #10 Indiana. From here on out I am also going to just note that Connecticut is the only program with 4 or more NCAA titles that is NOT in the Top 10. Note well -- Arizona is hot on the heels of the Hoosiers, just 3 games back as of the post date. So if/when UCLA passes Temple and if Arizona passes IU, I may just drop it back to Top 5, with notes re: IU and UConn.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 17-4, losing at Baylor in conference play but winning in Lexington in the final Big 12/SEC Challenge since the last update. UK also went 1-1, staying 7 games behind the leader.

UCLA had tied Temple for 5th place as the Bruins started 16-2 while Temple limped to a 10-9 start. Since then Temple has gone 4-0 while UCLA has been 1-2, so Temple is once again 3 games ahead in 5th place.

Meanwhile just out of the Top 10 Arizona is still 2 wins back from Indiana, both programs having gone 5-1 over the last 3 weeks. IU is on a 5 game winning streak and UA a 4 game streak.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 20-5, successfully defending The Phog against the shorthorns and traveling to Norman to take down the Sooners. While that was happening that other school using the initials K and U (in the wrong order, and having a Jayhawk as its most famous coach) lost at home to Arkansas and then traveled to Georgia to lose again, dropping them down to 8 games behind our Jayhawks.

Meanwhile UNC lost at Wake Forest but won in The Traitor Dome against Clemson; Duke lost at Miami and was robbed at Virginia and UCLA won twice on the road sweeping the Oregons while Temple lost 2 road games (SMU, Memphis), giving us a new #5 in the All Time Wins listing.

Elsewhere former #5 Syracuse won at Boston College and at Florida State; Notre Dame has now lost 7 of its last 8 games with its current 3 game losing streak (last week at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech); St. John's lost at Butler but beat Providence at home in Carnesecca Arena (capacity 6,107) on its Queens campus and Indiana beat Rutgers at home in Assembly Hall and Michigan on the road in Ann Arbor while Arizona won at Cal but lost at Stanford to end up Sunday now 2 wins out of a tie with my Hoosiers for tenth place.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 22-5, successfully escaping the bal-chatri in Stillwater and steamrolling Baylor in the second half in "THE PHOG" to stay atop the Big 12 along with tu. While that was happening that dark blue school with deep Kansas roots won twice, keeping them 8 games behind our Jayhawks.

Meanwhile that light blue school with deep Kansas roots (aka #3 UNC) lost at home to Miami and on the road to NC State. #4 Duke beat Notre Dame in Durham and Syracuse in Syracuse and #5 UCLA won twice at home while #6 Temple split its homestand 1-1 to put 2 wins between the programs.

Elsewhere #7 Syracuse was 1-1; Notre Dame lost its 4th and 5th straight (and has now lost 9 of its last 10 and 15 of its last 18); St. John's won at DePaul but lost at home to Creighton and Indiana lost at Northwestern but beat Illinois in Assembly Hall. Meanwhile just outside the Top 10 #11 Arizona beat Utah and Colorado to finish the weekend just 1 win behind my Hoosiers.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
are 24-5, winning in Fort Worth and hanging on to beat WVU in "THE PHOG" to stay atop the Big 12, now 1 game ahead of tu, who defeated ISU in Austin but lost at Baylor.

Returning to the ATWP, the dark blue school with deep Kansas roots also won twice, at Florida and at home against Auburn, keeping them 8 games behind our Jayhawks.

That light blue school with deep Kansas roots kept pace with the leaders this past week, winning at Notre Dame and in the Traitordome against Virginia. #4 Duke beat Louisville and Virginia Tech in Durham; #5 UCLA won on the road at Utah and took advantage of poor officiating to escape Colorado in Boulder, while #6 Temple lost at future Big 12 member Cincinatti.

Elsewhere #7 Syracuse lost twice on the road to Clemson and Pittsburgh; Notre Dame lost its 6th and 7th straight at home against UNC and on the road at Wake Forest, extending its losing streak to 7, having now lost 11 of its last 12 and 17 of its last 20); St. John's won at Georgetown but lost at home to Connecticut and Indiana lost at Michigan State (in the Spartans first game since the deadly campus shooting), but beat #5 Purdue in West Lafayette!

Meanwhile just outside the Top 10 #11 Arizona must have really irritated the basketball gods somehow to lose (1) at home in Tucson (2) in its only game of the week (3) to in-state rival Arizona State (4) on a 10 feet beyond half-court, buzzer beating heave that was nothing but net, 89-88. UofA finishes the weekend 2 games behind my Hoosiers.
