Roy Williams - "In case you don't know, Billy had disappeared for a couple of weeks, but he came back today. I told him I still think he's the best shooter I've ever coached. I'm going to think that 10 years from now. He's been willing to keep working, keep practicing and keep trying. I've been willing or dumb enough to keep puttting him out there. Today he made some big-time shots for us.

"Until that shot he (Vaughn) made at the (halftime) buzzer, every one was short. It shows he was not 100 percent. But Jacque Vaughn at 90 percent is a pretty good player.

"Today I was satisfied except for our work on the offensive backboards. Other than that I thought we did some great things today.

"I knew this would be a difficult game. Purdue is young, but after 30 games they are not freshmen anymore. I really respect their players and the job Gene (Keady) and his staff have done."

Purdue coach Gene Keady - "When you get beat in the NCAA Tournament, you feel horrible. But I'm Irish. Thank goodness Monday is a good day (St. Patrick's Day).

"In the second half we just wanted to be close with 10 minutes left, and, lo and behold, we got ahead by one. Then we didn't play good post D. Freshmen make freshmen mistatkes. You don't do the little things, you're not going to win. That's what beat us.

"Before the half the wrong guy took the ball out. That was another freshman mistake. Vaughn is quick, quick, quick. And he had nine assists. Our guy had one.

"We hung in there pretty good. Maybe it was fatique. We didn't hit those threes, so maybe that was it.

"(Our players) have seen (Thomas) on TV enough. They know he's going to make those threes, so don't leave him. That's simple. And they left him."
