Season summary

"More than anything else, it was a total team effort. That's a big-time cliche, I understand that. But I got ticked off at the first five and took them out, and we were down 10 or 11 at that point (early in the second half). I told them to sit over there for a while and told the other coaches to leave them alone because they weren't gooing to listen anyway. Maybe I was a little harsh. but at the smae time I wanted to try to shock them a little bit that they had to play, not go out and just go through the motions, and that's what I thought we were doing. So I put in five new guys, and I really thought they did a fantastic job and cut the lead to five. Then when I put the five starters back in I thought they really played. It was a whole different game, the two halves. The first half we couldn't throw it in the ocean; the second half we made a bunch of shots.

"In the final ten seconds we had a three-point lead and we were going to foul them. We hoped to make them throw it in in front of us like we did, and we wanted to get a foul. But at the same time we took the timeout just to look and see what their lineup was like. Ontjes got the ball where we wanted, but he went right by Patrick, and Patrick was supposed to foul him there. I didn't like the fact that Minor got the ball and got a three-point shot, because we didn't want them taking a three. but Greg Ostertag got out there and got a piece of the basketball. It's hard to shoot over Greg. It says here he had four blocked shots, but he bothered a lot of shots today, and his block on Curry's drive may have been as good a block on a big-time players as I've ever seen.

"We talked about it in pregame. We wanted five guys to rebound. Last time we played Oklahoma (94-84 KU win) we had 57 rebounds. Today we had 52. When they shoot the ball from as far out as they do, particularly Curry, the ball's going to bounce out farther. And if your guards are willing to chase the ball -- they don't have to run in there and box out a guy and go skying up to the rim -- but they've got to be willing to chase the ball, and that really helped us.

"The last 10 or 15 days, Richard Scott has been like the Richard Scott of old. I worried sick early in the game when Minor fouled him, because I thought it was his shouler he had hurt, but he'd gotten hit in the eye. We know it could pop out at any time, but he's working really hard to strengthen the other muscles and strengthen the joint, and he's been a big-time player for us for three games in a row.

"What they've accomplished right now, they should be proud of the season they've had. 24 and six, they should be really proud, but we do have some other goals we'll try to accomplish. One of our original goals was to win the Big 8 conference championship for a fourth in a row. We want to congatulate Missouri on what they did. But we feel good about what the kids have done, and the young kids are big-time players for us now. By this time they're not freshmen anymore."
