1:00 PM CT listen to the Crimson & Blue pregame show on the Jayhawk Radio Network courtesy of the KU Athletics leanplayer app!

There once was a fella named Bill
Whose hoops teams gave fans quite the thrills.
They’d fall far behind and then blow fans’ minds
To win with true grit and great skill!

Q: Can KANSAS beat Utah in THE PHOG?
A: Well, duh, YEAH!

Q: WILL KANSAS beat Utah in AFH Feb 7?
A: Aye, but there’s the rub, ‘tis nae a sure thing… which is why they play the game on another KANSAS JAYHAWKS...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Saturday at 1:30 PM CT on FOX our AP11 KANSAS JAYHAWKS (17-5|7-2) strive to extend their six game winning streak to seven as they face the unranked Utes of Utah (9-11|1-6) in the hallowed halls of The Cradle of College Basketball, Allen Fieldhouse!

The Jayhawks are 2-1 against Utah, with the Utes having won the game last year in Salt Lake City.

Quick quiz: which of the current sixteen Big 12 members can lay claim to having one or more NCAA Tournament titles in the history of their programs?

ESPN's Matchup Predictor favors KANSAS to win 94.9% of the time (link). The spread is 19.5 points in KU’s favor.

asteroid had not posted his predictions for this game at post time. However, his Big XII Projection Round 10 projects a 86-67 win for KANSAS in what looks like “a classic trap game, what with Arizona coming to Lawrence for Big Monday.”

Here is the link to CorpusJayhawk’s Rock Chalk Challenge newsletter projection with the predictions for this game (and again soooo much more). The DPPI is projecting a 93.2% chance of a KU win! By 26 points, even more asteroid’s 19 point margin (link)
May our favorite KU Men's hoops prognosticators be right!

Once again, some more links to make you think...

PREVIEW: KANSAS looking to slow down high scoring Utah duo by Sam WInton on JayhawkSlant

Should be accessible to all, but here's an excerpt just in case...

The Utes have struggled this season under first-year head coach Alex Jensen. However, they tote a dynamic scoring duo in Terrence Brown and Don McHenry. Brown ranks fourth in the Big 12 in scoring at 21.4 points per game.

“Brown is a natural scorer,” Bill Self said on Thursday. “He can score off the catch and he’s got range, but he still drives the ball and he’s got a good in-between game.”

McHenry is not far behind at 18.1 points per game. Utah’s duo combines to score 50% of its points, and they have the full attention of the Jayhawks.

“You’re gonna have to guard them,” Self said. “You’re gonna have to guard ball screens a certain ways with him [and] McHenry for sure because they can definitely score behind it.”
,,,
Utah has Self’s full attention on Saturday. He said there are things you can do to prepare for the quick turnaround, but the upcoming game ultimately is the most important.

“I’m gonna believe that adrenaline will take over and we can get through it because we’re not going to sacrifice Saturday to rest people for Monday,” Self said. “I’m believing that you know, we’re gonna play to win exactly how we need to play to win, at least in our opinion, on Saturday and then worry about Monday when Saturday’s over.”

Yes. The Hawks did a great job guarding McHenry but Keanu Dawes had the game of his life and really kept Utah in it. Hopefully Tre and the rest of the Hawks get their stroke back for the AZ game. Shooting 17% from beyond the arc will not cut it against AZ.

I had 2 simple hopes coming into this game, with the first being the crucial one: (1) Win it, and avoid the looking-ahead trap-game loss; (2) Win going away, so that our starters didn't have to play most of the game.

Well, you can't have it all. Thankfully, the lads got the W against a pesky Utah team that just wouldn't go away until late. Unfortunately, the latter meant we had to play the Core 5 longer than any KU fan would have hoped. Meanwhile, Zona won in a laugher over OSU at home, allowing them to game-manage their starters for about 22-25 minutes each. (They went about 8 deep)

KU was hampered in its play-the-bench hopes not only by the closer-than-expected game, but also by Bench Guy 1 (Elmarko) sitting out. In retrospect, I'm glad Self did that because now he'll be fresh for the heavyweight battle against the Wildcats tomorrow night. Also on the positive side, Dawson came in and played well in his 7 minutes of floor time, hitting a nice 3 and dishing an assist. Rosario played 6, but missed his lone 3-point attempt (rinse/repeat) and garnered 2 fouls - though he did grab a rebound.

Clearly this was a game where KU was just going through the motions to get to the bigger game - but their superior talent and the home atmosphere ensured that that didn't turn into a dreaded trap-game loss. Kudos to the players and staff on that count.

Next up, the big dawg, Arizona, on Big Monday. Cannot wait!

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”

1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.
