After Saturday, which was the start of a horrible weekend for Kansas and Chiefs fans

Self is still tied with Phog for total career wins at 746.

ROCK CHALK!
JAYHAWK!
KU!

WON-LOST
at KU ... NAME ......... ( % ) . CAREER ( % )

590-219 Phog Allen.... (.729) 746-264 . (.739)
539-121 BILL SELF....... (.817) 746-226 . (.767)
418-101 Roy Williams (.805) 903-264 . (.774)

51 = Wins to tie Phog as winningest Head Coach in KANSAS history.*
0 = Wins to tie Phog as 2nd winningest KANSAS Head Coach for TOTAL CAREER
157 = Wins to tie Roy as THE winningest KANSAS Head Coach for TOTAL CAREER

*SELF'S PROJECTED "KU PASS YEAR": AY2023-24
=============================================
BACKGROUND
(This section seldom changes during the course of the season, but is copied in each new post for easy reference.)
Allowing that Bill passes Phog's Career totals in AY2021-22, he will still be just the 2nd winningest men's basketball coach to ever coach at KANSAS.

Roy only stayed at KU long enough to record a 418-101 KANSAS record, but he went on to pass Phog in Career wins with his alma mater. Roy (who turned 71 in August 2021) retired April 1, 2021 with a career record of 903-264 (.774) after 33 seasons coaching KU (15 years , 418-101, .805) and the tarred ones (18 years, 485-163, .748).

Bill (who turns 60 in December 2022) still has a long way to go after 28 seasons (roughly another 7 seasons) to catch and pass Roy in total career wins and be the winningest head coach ever to coach at KANSAS.

Back to and closing with Bill passing Phog -- assuming a return to 31 game seasons and two consecutive incredible seasons for the Jayhawks, Bill could mathematically pass Phog in two years, i.e., at the end of the AY2022-23 postseason, but winning 68 games in two consecutive seasons is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. Self has had back-to back seasons totally 68 or more wins twice.

60+ WIN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS
70 wins AY2006-07 and AY2007-08
68 wins AY2009-10 and AY2010-11
67 wins AY2010-11 and AY2011-12
64 wins (a) AY2007-08 and AY 2008-09 (b) AY2015-16 and AY2016-17
63 wins AY2011-12 and AY2012-13
62 wins AY2016-17 and AY2017-18

Until the NCAA case is settled, the prospects for future KU teams doing so well are nowhere near rosy, but the new lifetime contract should have a positive impact on recruiting.

Given the above, and allowing Self’s teams averaging 25 wins a year for the next 3 years, my "Pass Year" projection for Bill passing Phog is AY2023-24.

May he beat that projection!

How much longer will Bill Self coach?
I'd love to see him coach for another 11 seasons (including this season) for 39 total seasons coaching, retiring at 70 in 2033 and winning over 1000 games in his career.

But what does Bill think, you say?

After Tuesday's W against KState in The Phog

WON-LOST
at KU ... NAME ......... ( % ) . CAREER ( % )

590-219 Phog Allen.... (.729) 746-264 . (.739)
545-122 BILL SELF.... (.817) 752-227 . (.768)
418-101 Roy Williams (.808) 903-264 . (.774)

45 = Wins to tie Phog as winningest Head Coach in KANSAS history.*
151 = Wins to tie Roy as THE winningest KANSAS Head Coach for TOTAL CAREER
2 = wins to tie John Beilein for 20th place on the All TIme Winningest D1 Coaches list.

*SELF'S PROJECTED "KU PASS YEAR": AY2023-24
=============================================

Big 12 Champions for the 20th time in 26 Big 12 seasons!
And the Senior Game Winning Streak is alive and well at 39!
(As asteroid pointed out, none of our current guys -- yes, not even Mitch -- were alive when KU experienced it's last Senior Game loss in 1983 to Nebraska)
And with this win Self ties John Beilein for 20th place on the All Time Winningest D1 Coaches list.

His next win will tie him with Coach Iba for 19th place.

Next Up -- The Big 12 Tournament, where 1 seed KU plays the winner of Wednesday's opening game, 9 seed WVU v 8 seed KState at 6:00 PM CT on ESPNU.
(Remember, no postseason for OKState this time around).

*SELF'S PROJECTED "KU PASS YEAR": AY2023-24
=============================================

Last Update: 2022-03-27

With Bill passing Phog's Career totals in AY2021-22, he will still be just the 2nd winningest men's basketball coach to ever coach at KANSAS.

Bill (who turns 60 in December 2022) still has a long way to go after 29 seasons (conservatively another 6 seasons if he averages 25 wins per season) to catch and pass Roy in total career wins and be the winningest head coach ever to coach at KANSAS.

Back to and closing with Bill passing Phog --

Assuming a return to 31 game seasons and two consecutive incredible seasons for the Jayhawks, Bill could mathematically pass Phog by the end of the AY2022-23 postseason. That would require winning 68 games in two consecutive seasons, which is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. Self has had back-to back seasons totally 68 or more wins twice.

60+ WIN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS
70 wins AY2006-07 and AY2007-08
68 wins AY2009-10 and AY2010-11
67 wins AY2010-11 and AY2011-12
64 wins (a) AY2007-08 and AY 2008-09 (b) AY2015-16 and AY2016-17
63 wins AY2011-12 and AY2012-13
62 wins AY2016-17 and AY2017-18

Until the NCAA case is settled, the prospects for future KU teams doing so well are not as rosy as they otherwise might be, but the new lifetime contract already seems to be having a positive impact if having the Rivals #3 recruiting class for 2022 is any indication.

Given the above, and allowing Self’s teams averaging *just* 25 wins a year for the next 3 years, my "Pass Year" projection for Bill passing Phog is AY2023-24.

May he beat that projection!

How much longer will Bill Self coach?
I'd love to see him coach for another 11 seasons (including this season) for 39 total seasons coaching, retiring at 70 in 2033 and winning over 1000 games in his career.
