A little something for you to heighten (if possible) your appreciation of Bill Self, Jr., college basketball coach extraordinaire...

Below are the NCAA official career W-L records for the Top 25 Division 1 Men's Basketball Head Coaches as of the completion of yesterday's competitions.

Note that Bill is the only person on the list with under 30 years as a head coach.

Mark Few is the current holder of the title Best Active Coach to Never Win an NCAA Championship.
He does, however, come in at #1 for career W-L%, 10 years or more at D-1.

And I just learned this today -- did anyone else here know it? --

Bill Self and Mark Few were born on the exact same day in 1962, a mere 1,540 miles separating their arrival.

One last thing -- I do not recall noting this before -- with his first W of this season earning him W #730 , Bill passed Norm ("SIT DOWN, NORM!") Stewart on the Career Wins list.

It just felt good to note that.

I should note that the NCAA database has not been updated to reflect Jim Calhoun retiring back in November 2021.
Calhoun retires from St, Joseph

Also wanted to point out in both lists:
Self
Williams
Rupp
The Traitor Smith
and all of them in the Top 10 in W-L%

And of significance to Bill (ignore how much he pooh-poohs it) and all the old Big 6/7/8 fans, especially those affiliated with the Cowboys -- with 8 more wins Self will pass his one time mentor and fellow Hall of Famer Coach Henry Iba.

Good stuff, HE. Doing some (very) quick math, it looks like HCBS will move into the top 15 on the all time wins list by the end of next season.

I think what impresses me most about HCBS win loss % is he is consistently doing it against one of the toughest schedules in the country.

I believe we would find the same held true for Roy & TTS as well — which should not surprise us since we’ve followed them throughout their storied careers.

Not sure if the same can be said about Rupp?

Corpus, do you have the data to determine how tough the Rupp UK schedules were back then? TIA!

Don't have data before 1950. Sorry.

Rupp's Avg, SOS rank is 53rd with an average number of NCAA teams at 184.

Self's avg SOS rank is 13th with an average No. NCAA Div 1 teams of 345

Thanks, Corpus!

Should have asked you to run Roy and Smith as well. Apologies for the followup that should have been part of the original question. And TIA again!

The Rank on the far right column is the Rank of average SOS for the years of that coach. For instance, from 2004-2022 Kansas has the No. 1 toughest SOS and from 1931-1972 Kentucky had the 54th toughest SOS. Thought that was sort of what you were looking for. Just in case you are interested, the UNC SOS in 2022 has lowered their average to 13.53 vs. KU at 13.05. That is why Self is 1st from 2004 through 2022 and Williams was 1st from 2004 through 2021.

Just a note that HCBS is currently at #21 on the All-Times Wins list, and hopefully will crack the Top 20 before the end of the regular season. (Keeping my fingers crossed for KU helping him pass Coach Iba for #19 by then!)

18. 759 Ed Diddle
19. 755 Henry Iba
20. 754 John Beilein
21. 750 Bill Self
