"I have mixed emotions. San Diego had a good game plan as far as controlling the tempo. We didn't shoot well in the first half even though we were getting good looks. I thought we'd be more intense in the second half, but they were more active than we were. I was really surprised, because the last two days we were really loose.

"General, it (spurts) is fueled by our defense. I think that was it tonight during two or three three- or four-minute stretches.

"I wish we'd have been a little more intense. But it's opening night, and it's a 'W.' You like that, but we've got a lot of word to do. We were outrebounded. We've got to understand it's not just turn around and reach up in the air. We've got to put a body on some people and keep it on them. Defensively we didn't create as much the second half. We've got to shoot it a lot better when we get open looks like we did tonight.

"Jacque Vaughn was so unselfish. He did a good job of distributing the ball. We tried to give him a breather around the television timeouts so he wouldn't have to play 40 minutes.

"Sean Pearson had good looks in the first half. I told him they were good shots, and he should keep taking them. He was more active even when the ball wasn't going in the hole.

"We had 16,000 people here with the (holiday) break. It shows again there's something special about Kansas basketball."
