Michelle Obama....

If she were to run next time, could she be our first woman President?

A very good friend of mine suggested that if she ran, she would be. Of course 6 years ago I said that if Hillary ran, she would be, so I am not certain any sort of prediction at this point has any validity. But I thought I would put it out there for folks to think about.

That's a good question and I don't have a definitive answer. I do know that in an interview with Jann Wenner in the latest Rolling Stone, President Obama says she will remain active in public life, but will not run for public office. After the indignities her husband has endured over the past 8 years and given how Drumpf has emboldened the racists in this country and brought them out from under their rocks, I don't see why she would want to subject herself to the ugliness that would ensue were she to run.

I agree, Doc. After what her husband endured, why would she want to put herself through that?

My thought about a woman who should run when she gets quite a lot older, is Chelsea Clinton. I've seen her doing a few interviews, and she presents herself as a wise, very well-spoken young woman. (Then again, after seeing what her mother endured, why would she even think of being in politics?)

Maybe in the meantime we could be lucky enough to have Elizabeth Warren as our first woman POTUS. She's a firecracker and fearless, to boot!

As racist as our country is, according to the left, I don't think that we could elect Elizabeth Warren, a Native American.

We've had this discussion several times before. If you truly believe racism doesn't exist in this country, you haven't been paying attention or you are living in some parallel universe.

exists. I think a lot of people think that the left uses it as an excuse to not address other issues. Every criticism of Obama was due to racism. The comparable tactic on the right was if you disagreed with Bush you were un-American.

I think the left ignores a lot of true issues by attempting to discredit the source by playing the race card. As a result you are seeing a voice given to true racist. No one denies they are out there, I think people question the reason they are more vocal though and the actual degree of it. By calling everyone racist, you cheapen the term and force a lot of people into a corner where they do not belong.

Your statement is dismissive and attempts to belittle true criticism. Similar to the anti - American rants we used to see.

It is about degrees here, imo

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this comment:

"After what her husband endured, why would she want to put herself through that?"

What did President Obama "endure"? Opposition from the right? He is adored by the press. I just can't imagine what he has had to endure any greater than what other presidents have also had to "endure". It goes with the job.

Come now, Allen! You can't be that unaware., The list is long, but I'll hit some of the highlights for you. Legitimacy as president and religious faith questioned for years (Kenyan-born Muslim), called a "liar" by a sitting member of Congress during a SOTU address. Countless posters portraying him as an African witch doctor and an ape, others showing him eating watermelon. Hung and burned in effigy many times. Wife referred to by your favorite propaganda outlet as his "baby mama," shamed for showing her bar arms, also called "monkey" and "ape." Insulting names like BO, Obummer, etc. There's much more, but this is enough.

There was a lot more than that as well. Doc, but I would say that the name calling is irrelevant as pretty much every President has had that. Heck you do it to the Republicans all the time. I would think that that level of stuff is probably irrelevant to them.

But the Ape in Heels for his wife, the monkey comments, the Muslim, etc. that was all pretty horrible and sad.

But that brings me to another topic which I am trying how to start a new thread on it. Since Fake News is all the rage I wanted to give it some thought and start a new thread on it, I just don't have the time right at this moment.

My comment was dismissive. I feel that it is appropriate to be dismissive of snide, snarky comments such as boulderhawk's comment about the left and Elizabeth Warren. You will disagree, I'm sure.

"Playing the race card." This is a phrase created by the right to marginalize and be dismissive of folks who call out racism and bigotry when, in their opinion, it is encountered. Suppose someone sees a statement or action that is obviously racist. Is calling it as such "playing the race card?" As for Republicans, are all Republicans racists? Of course not. Are there racist Democrats? Undoubtedly. However, ever racist/bigot I've ever known who expressed a political affiliation was a Republican.

Assuming Ms. Obama will not be running for POTUS, let's ask the question, "Who might be the first woman POTUS?" I can think of several names. For the Dems, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Tulsi Gabbard come to mind. The only Republican woman I can name is Nikki Haley. Anybody else want to toss out a name or 10?

I have lived all over the US and parts of Europe. North, South East West, Midwest and can tell you that people are people. Some are bigoted. Some are racist. Most are just average. And they come from both parties rather routinely.

To the topic of race card; When every criticism of a person is dismissed as being racially motivated, then yes they are playing the race card. Labeling a person to dismiss and not address real issues is what allows one to be insulated from the truth. It creates great shock at political outcomes like we just had.

I read boulder's comment to be making fun of the left's insistence that the country is motivated so dramatically by racism that there isn't a chance for her. I don't know a great deal about her, but what little I do know, I like. But I am one of the many who had issues with Obama and was routinely dismissed as being racially motivated. So I can sort of see where he was coming from.

Calling out racist and bigoted comments should be done. But dismissing any criticism as racially motivated discredits the criticism as well as the defender.

As for seeing something that is obviously racist, I would offer that little has been placed out there. Bigoted? Yes. Racially motivated? Yes. Racist? Not as much as is often claimed. Racists comments require a superiority or inferiority due to race not just a degradation. More often than not, comments called out as racist are more often than not bigoted and ignorant, but not racist.

Can't stand her.

Since you asked for GOP names, I will give you what I recall from other conversations with folks.

I am terrible with names, but there is a woman from NH that was talked of very highly. Mitch McConnell's wife. (Can't think of her name either, but she had appeal across both sides of the aisle for a while) I know some have talked about Rice (though I am not a big fan of hers either). The Senator from Maine I believe is rather moderate.

I asked what Obama has endured more than any other president. I wouldn’t consider being born in Kenya or being called a Muslim a bad thing. Kenyans and Muslims are not bad people! President Obama’s dad was born in Kenya so I’m not sure Obama would find that remark derogatory. I will say it certainly is horrible that anyone would call any black woman “an ape in heels”! It is especially disrespectful to say that about the first lady. Just like it is very disrespectful to call Laura Bush a murderer or call Melania Trump a “porn star”. President Bush, hammered by the insidious "Bush Lied, People Died" mantra, endured one of the most vicious smears against any president in history. He was called a murderer, burned in effigy, compared to Hitler, mocked repeatedly and incessantly. He was very intelligent and in fact had better grades than most at Harvard and Yale but was called ignorant. Paul McCartney (a foreigner) came to our White House and ridiculed Bush and by claiming he didn’t even know what a “library” was. The Hollywood elite mocked President Bush for 8 years and made vulgar references about body parts when talking about him. There were books, TV programs and calendars making fun of Bush. I could go on, but this is enough for now to back up my claim that President Obama didn’t have to “endure” anything more than President Bush. President Obama himself dished out some very poor treatment to President Bush by blaming (and continuing to) everything on him. President Obama took no responsibility for his own actions and still does not.

I hope that President elect Trump will try to solve problems instead of whine, complain and blame everything on President Obama. We will see.

Yes, Allen, Kenyans and Muslims are good people. but you missed my point. I was referring to the "birther movement" that attempted to de-legitimize the Obama presidency and portray him as not being a "real" American. This vile attack on the President is unprecedented in American history. Every President has been mocked and ridiculed to some degree. Everyone of them. However. the degree to which President Obama has been attacked far exceeds that of any other President and, yes, much of it (not all) has been based on his race. Apparently, you don't remember the mess Obama inherited when he was elected in 2008 and much of it was Bush's fault.

The "birther movement" was a very small percentage of Americans who were involved in that. Most intelligent Americans knew that Obama was a "real" American.

The vile attack on Donald Trump is also unprecedented and he isn't even President yet! The left can't accept loss and claim that he is not truly the president! We had an election and Trump won. How ironic that you are bringing up the attempt by a few to "de-legitimize" the Obama presidency. That is exactly what your very own side is trying to do now with Donald Trump's presidency! I can only imagine what he and his family will go through in the next four years. I think in the end he will find that he was treated much worse than Obama and his family. Time will tell.

Trump was a LEADING birther, Allen, and didn't admit Obama was, in fact, an American until the campaign! Are you really that out of touch? Through his words and actions, Drumpf has earned the ridicule he is receiving. That you would support a man who advocates grabbing women by their genitals is shocking.

I'm not out of touch, Doc. But do you really think all of the hate and violence is the same as "ridicule"? I agree Trump said some vulgar, disrespectful things about women--11 years ago. If his wife forgave him, don't you think the rest of us should also? Holding on to hate and grudges only hurts the person doing the grudge holding. I'm pretty sure it's not hurting Trump, no matter how we feel about him. He is our President-elect. You were miserable for 8 years of George W. Bush, so I suppose you will be equally miserable for the next 8 years of Donald J. Trump. Sorry......unfortunately, I know JUST how you feel!

It would be helpful if you would state specific reasons why you were so miserable during the 8 years President Obama has been our President. Unlike Bush, he started no unprovoked war which resulted in the maiming and killing of thousands upon thousands.
Unlike Trump, he shows respect for women, different cultures, and lifestyles. He has not made fun of the handicapped. He hasn't
bragged that he could shoot someone on the street and suffer no consequences. He has preferred negotiations and diplomacy with our enemies whenever possible rather than declaring war, using force only as a last resort. He certainly appears to be of excellent moral character.

You might try broadening your media source horizons, Allen, rather than basing your opinions on what Fox News reports. The opinions you hold lack credibility and evidence. Even if you don't like anyone on MSNBC, there are public television news programs which are usually bi-partisan.
