I could post that the sun came up this morning, and there still would be a flag. It seems to be automatic. What gives?

The flag just means that you are participating in the thread.

Any thread you start or post on will have the flag pop up on it.

I guess it is a visual way for you to view a board and know quickly which threads you are participating in.

I hear ya, Murph. I was confused, too, for a while before someone filled me. After learning what it meant, looking back, I felt like I was a dog chasing its tail. :)
