I don’t think that I have seen or heard any news surrounding the DnP saga that has bothered me as much as this story has. It sheds a terrible light on: Darren Peterson and/or the entire KU Men’s Basketball Program (including HCBS, the coaching staff, the trainers ) and quite possibly University of Kansas Medical School physicians.
The article opens with “Darren Peterson finally has an answer.” Not THE answer- AN answer.
First let’s assume that the news is false and that they still don’t know what caused his issues and that he wasn’t taking a supplement. This story would then be a tactic to burnish his draft stock by declaring “Hey- I’m OK! It was this stuff all along and now I’m clean and back to normal! Show me the money!”
Now let’s assume the story is largely true. If this is the case then either Peterson was very secretive and not forthcoming about his supplement use or all of the medical personnel forgot to ask one of the most basic medical history questions- What medications are you taking? Any vitamins or supplements? I find it very hard to believe that no one, from training staff to physicians wouldn’t have asked, but if the story is true and DnP stayed on creatine throughout the season either they asked and he did not tell them or he did tell them and they failed to act on that knowledge. One way or the other someone’s got mud on their face.
How does this reflect on the control the program has over the player’s fitness and nutrition? I would think that they would be cognizant of everything that they eat, drink and take! Maybe, maybe not.
Bottom line- if the story is accurate it kind of throws the KU program under the bus. Shame on all parties for not competently cooperating and figuring this out at the very onset.
