HCBS checks in at #11.
D1 MEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACHES with 800+ Wins
Ranked by # of Wins as of 2026-03-22 Source: stats.ncaa.org/head_coaches
Top 25 Winningest D1 Men’s Coaches are shown to capture who is getting close to 800 wins.
ACTIVE COACHES NAMES are ALL CAPS; ★ Naismith Memorial Basketball HOFNOTES
AGE* = CURRENT age for ACTIVE coaches, Age at Retirement for RETIRED coaches
(Average Retirement age for above 17 Retired coaches = 71)
1. Boeheim’s totals do not include 101 wins vacated by the NCAA.
2. Calipari’s totals do not include 42 wins and 2 losses vacated by the NCAA.
3. Self’s totals do not include 15 wins vacated by the NCAA.
4. Pitino’s totals do not include 123 wins and 3 losses vacated by the NCAA.
Looking at that age data, you would think he'd have a few solid years left in the tank (on top of the above recall that Phog was 70 when he was forced to retire). But each situation has its own particular factors to consider.
What is within his reach if he decides to stay a bit longer? (clearly a season by season decision if he does return...)
36 = Wins left for Bill to tie Kansas alum and NMBHOF member Adolph Rupp (876-190) on the ATW D1 Men's Coaches list.
60 = Wins left for Bill to reach total career win #900
63 = Wins left for Bill to tie Roy as THE winningest KANSAS Head Coach for TOTAL CAREER
67 = Wins Left for Bill to reach KU career win #700
The updated official NCAA KANSAS and CAREER W-L records for Bill Self, Phog Allen and Roy Williams are reflected below.
NCAA WON-LOST RECORDS OF WINNINGEST KANSAS MEN'S BASKETBALL COACHES
The above record for Self does not include the 15 wins from AY2017-18 vacated by the NCAA five years later in 2023
I'd love to see him stay long enough to right the ship, reach those milestones and maybe a 3rd NC along the way, but I won't begrudge him at all if he decides to close the record book on his career.

Billy Donovan?
From the linked article (emphasis mine)...
"According to college basketball insider Rob Reinhart, UNC reached out to Donovan for the head coach opportunity. However, the Bulls’ head coach is not interested in the role and is actually pursuing some other opportunities in college basketball instead. Reinhart also added that UNC was never really interested in bringing Donovan aboard; they just wanted to check NBA waters."
article
I wouldn't mind having Donovan, but at 60 he is just 3 years younger than Bill.
Who would you like to see take Bill's place if he steps down?
IMO in the current environment KU is not going to get Dusty May or McCasland or Tommy Lloyd and especially not Otzelberger.
I like them all, but they are all well taken care of and do they really want to be the guy that followed Self?
And with UNC firing Hubert Davis (see the Coaching Carousel thread) I have to believe that the Tar Heels job is going to get more attention than the Kansas one.
- Perceived bigger brand, whether we think so or not. I believe KU will always be national second billing to UNC if coaching jobs are both open.
- Following a coach who never won the big one, so high expectations but not following a legend.
- Having to face one real threat (Duke) instead of two to four (AZ, UH, ISU and Tech)
Waddya think?

Also: There are some loose rumors out there in CBB circles this morning that Bill Self could announce his retirement from today, but a source close to Self tells @CBSSports that is "bad information" and not on the table as of now. Will pod on that, too:

I just realized that when Self does retire I'll be able to finalize the spreadsheets I have on him.
Doubt I will start another with the new guy, whoever it may be.
Bill's by Season career record, especially comparing his KU career to Roy's (and the Roy info includes KU & UNC)
(dang, have we been spoiled! If only Roy won one with KU...
)
Record Against Big 12 Opponents
Record Against Nonconference Opponents
In season record in All Time Winningest D1 Men's hoops coaches
et cetera, et cetera...
