You should be able to see the video even without an account,

I love that guy. His energy and enthusiasm are so infectious. I wish there were some legal loophole to allow him to return (grad school?), because if there were ever a match made in Heaven for a player and fan base, it’s Mel and Jayhawk Nation.

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”

1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.

Melvin spent 2 years in JUCO at Monroe College (2021-22 & 2022-23)

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me that if the NCAA gave a blanket waiver saying 1 year at JUCO would not count against a player's eligibility clock - which they did, which is why Melvin and so many other former JUCO players are still playing this year - then they have opened the door for all NJCAA participation to NOT count against the eligibility clock, which would give Melvin another year of eligibility.

The NCAA specified that the blanket waiver (which was designed to keep them out of court and Congress IIRC) did NOT apply to experience at NCAA D2 or D3 or NAIA participation, only to JUCO participation, and only for one year.

But if 1 year of NJCAA participation doesn't count toward the NCAA eligibility clock, why do any?
You have to believe the NCAA would see that allowing one year would bring challenges down the road from student-athletes who had two years under their belts and wanted that one more year, either to finish a bachelor's degree or start a grad degree.

(For that matter why does NAIA participation count? TTBOMK - and I may be wrong - the NAIA, like the NJCAA, is not ruled by the NCAA.)

Outside high school programs like OverTime Elite or the postgrad programs available at places like Brewster Academy in NH - essentially a 5th year of HS - don't start the E clock. Why should JUCOs?

I have read, but have not confirmed (mostly because it makes so much sense) that JUCO basketball programs have lost a lot of players to those other programs in part because the others do NOT start the E clock, but do give a comparable experience as far as basketball development opportunities are concerned. Apparently the NJCAA wants to be on level playing ground with those organizations in this respect, which again makes sound business sense for those programs.

There are apparently several court cases still being looked at right now involving either this or similar questions. One recent ruling - whose particulars do not fit Melvin's situation from what I have read - recently came back in favor of the NCAA. But the others still go on, and it is my understanding that is what folks are watching.

Melvin right now is focused on school and this season. He has indicated he would love to play another year at KU, but that he would not be diving into that until after the season.

I like his priorities.
