Naismith Memorial
The memorial for Dr. James Naismith (not his actual gravesite that Roy used to run by, which is located elsewhere in the cemetery), inventor of basketball and first basketball coach for The University of Kansas. Founder of THE greatest coaching tree in the history of the game, the irony is that he is the only coach in KU history to have a losing record. By his own admission, he was in it for the fun, not the competition. The memorial plaques on the ground around the centerpiece contain information on the members of his coaching tree. The first 5 benches from left to right tell the Naismith story, then benches 6-8 contain the rest of his tree and the names of KU Men's Basketball coaches through Roy Williams, plus Women's Basketball Coach Marian Washington.(first name mispelled in image).
If you walked toward the Naismith monument in the back, as you stepped onto the memorial plaza you would have two blank plaques in front of you, Rupp's plaque to your left and Smith's plaque to your right. Straight ahead of you would be Phog's plaque, then moving straight ahead is Larry Brown and then Dutch Lonborg.
