“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”
1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.
Coach speaks up (and out).

I was chatting with HawkErrant on Tuesday, and when we turned to DP I said “let’s think scenarically.” On the benign side of the spectrum, DP might just have encountered very bad luck with injuries and sickness. On the other (alarming) side, this could all be about his handlers, the NBA, and load management. In the middle, it might be some combo of both.
Self is telling us it’s the bad-luck benign scenario.
Fingers crossed for bright days ahead.

"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
I have nothing but the deepest respect for Self and I think it's possible that he's being 100% honest. I also have never seen him throw a player under the bus. Sure, he's called out guys for a lack of effort or for playing soft, but that's a motivational tool. The part that is keeping me grasping onto the "bad luck" side of the slope is that I don't see an upside in all this for DP.
Sure, he'll likely go as one of the very top draft picks this spring but "one of the very top" and "#1" are different, and this has already brought the "#1" spot into question.
At this point, it has brought his reputation into question, so I'd think that the motivation would be 100% behind proving the critics wrong by showing what he can do on the court.
Now for the conspiracy theory: Perhaps DP knows that at any time he can throw the switch and carry this team wherever they need to go, and therefore he intentionally kept himself out of harm's way until now. And now that we're only 7 games out from the post-season, he'll rattle off 7 triple doubles to cap off the regular season. Yeah, far fetched, I know.
But nevertheless, I don't see how somehow concocting this situation could possibly have benefitted him.
