On Monday night, Kansas head coach Bill Self was taken to LMH Health by ambulance after feeling under the weather late in the day. In a release sent out to the media that night, it was announced that Self didn’t make the trip to Boulder with his team.
Self, on Tuesday afternoon, sent out a statement, which provided the very latest update on his health and announced that Jacque Vaughn would serve as acting head coach against Colorado on Tuesday night.
Not long after No. 19 Kansas (14-5; 4-2) defeated Colorado, 75-69, to secure its first conference road win of the season, Vaughn spoke to the media.
Opening comment:
Reflecting back on it pretty quickly since the game has been over, I told the guys that the best part of team sports is that everyone has a part. My part was to fill in for Coach. You do the best that you can, you do it in your way. But I think at the end of the day, mission accomplished. We came here to get a win. We’ve got a great group who showed some resilience tonight, and we’ll go home with the W.
Jacque, has Coach Self already texted you?
Texted, yes. And then we were talking. I left as he was talking to the whole coaching staff, so we were talking about the game a little bit. So, he definitely was watching the game. We didn’t play as well as we could have or wanted to, but he’s excited that we got a W.
Did he say he was proud of you for stepping in:
When we talked initially, he knows I’ll do anything that he asks. My role tonight was to, I guess, stand up a little bit. But collectively, we’ve got a great group—Coach Townsend, Coach Dooley, the scout was done by Coach Bland and Coach Saddler. So our group is pretty high level, and they allowed me to stand up and yell some plays out today.
What do you think of the performance from Melvin Council:
Melvin was great. He has done that before for us. Really, just get it in his head that he’s not going to allow us to lose. The plays that he made gave us some momentum. He got to the rim, he was aggressive, and he gave us life when we needed it.
Did Peterson turn his ankle:
Yeah, he did, but not to the extent where he didn’t finish the game, which was great. So he showed a lot of resilience in being out there and finishing with our group. It was good to see.
Jacque, you had a lot of success here as a player, and I don’t know if you’ve been back in almost 30 years. Did it bring back good memories? What did you think of the crowd?
Yeah, good memories for me. I think our record overall during my time at KU was pretty good—old Big Eight days. So I don’t mind continuing that. This is a great place. I think Tad is doing an unbelievable job with his group. Boulder is a great place. I love walking and getting some crisp air and a good coffee. So it’s been good memories coming back, for sure.
Coach, six three-pointers for Colorado in the first half, I think three for 17 in the second half. Defensively for you guys, what changed to take those looks away in the second half?
Yeah, we definitely changed up our defense a little bit to take away some looks. They went a little smaller in the second half, didn’t play 50 as much, and that gave us a chance to switch more defensively. I think that was to our advantage a little bit and gave us a chance to contest some of those threes. Game plan-wise, we were allowing some of those in the first half and paid for it a little bit. There were opportunities for us to stretch the lead that we didn’t capitalize on. But overall, it allowed us to change our defense in the second half.
Coach, Tre had 15 rebounds today. What did his contributions on the glass mean to your team in this one?
It was hard to really take him out of the game. Overall, his ability to play different styles for us—whether it’s making threes, rebounding the basketball, or running in transition—he was huge for us tonight. I’m not sure we win this game without Tre.
You guys faced a good chunk of adversity tonight with Coach Self being gone. Do you feel like you learned anything new about this team tonight, or did it just reinforce things you already knew?
I think we were building off our last two games. One thing coach talked about before we left was that we hadn’t played well on the road. Our road record was what it was. So we got a chance to alleviate that a little bit and get that turning back in our direction. That was the goal—to come here, get a win on the road, and string some good performances together. Not a great performance, but it counts in the W column.
What did you see out of Flory in the second half?
We tried to establish Flory early in the game, maybe a little to our detriment. The guys were trying to look for him too much at times, which made us a little stagnant. In the second half, it came more naturally within the flow of the offense. He scored some big buckets for us and made some defensive stops. We talked about switching more, and he was able to defend guards, block shots, and then capitalize on the offensive end. He’s a special talent for our group.
Do you think this is your only game? Do you expect Coach back for the K-State game?
Coach sounded extremely excited about the win. We were talking. I don’t know about the timeline of this thing. Like I said, I’ll do my part, whatever it is. But he’s excited, and I look forward to seeing him when we get back.
What did you see from Darryn Peterson, even though he was hampered a bit? He was still able to knock down shots.
At the end of the day, can we leave this with an empty tank and leave everything on the floor for your teammates? He tried to do that tonight, and the bank was open late—late-night ATM withdrawal.
