This Origin Post is updated throughout the year with the latest summary data for Kansas Men's Basketball recruiting as of the date shown in the Subject line. This one post gives the reader a snapshot of the known and rumored status of KUMBB recruiting as of that date. Subsequent posts in this thread will contain later information or comments as events unfold, but the data those posts contain will be summarized in this origin post as appropriate.

For your easy reference, you can click here to see last season's recruiting thread.
And you can click here for information on the NCAA recruiting calendar for the academic year..
Enjoy!

I started this late this time around (November 2024), so a lot of history that might normally be included won’t be this time.

REQUEST TO RCBers
In an effort to keep recruiting information and Q&As easily accessible in one thread, please consider posting your recruiting comments and questions for this recruiting season in this pinned thread. Alternatively I will post a link here to your post in order to keep the recruiting info connected.

NOTE WELL: with new NCAA rules in effect for AY2025-26 that set new ROSTER limits for all NCAA sports and removed scholarship caps, thus setting Scholarship limits equal to each sports ROSTER limit, it is looking like true "walk-ons" are not actually going to exist anymore unless the program chooses to limit itself to fewer scholarship players for economic reasons. In the past there was always an allowance in the roster limit for walk-ons above and beyond the scholarship limit. Starting AY2025-26 student-Athletes can still agree to play without a scholarship, but the new "S=R Limit" ruling has walk-ons impacting how many scholarships a program can offer since the roster limit cannot be exceeded.

NOTES and LEGEND for COMMITTED/SIGNED
(1) RSCI: 3 (Aug 24 data); ESPN100: 2|5*; 247sports.com: 1|5*; On3: 2|5*
(2) RSCI: 15; ESPN100: 26|4*; 247sports.com: 20|4* ; On3: 23|4*. Played for Overtime Elite three seasons. Data is last available before services dropped him from the 2025 class because he enrolled early JAN2025, technically making him Class of 2024.
(3) RSCI: -; ESPN100: 88|4*; 247sports.com: 82|4* ; On3: 145|3*. Played for Overtime Elite two seasons
(4) Nickens is a dual sport athlete, his primary being football, so his scholarship is counted against Football, making him a Basketball walk-on for scholarship tracking purposes. But he will still count against KU's roster limit, which I am hearing will also be impacted by the penalty.:(
(5) Dawson is a combo guard who started all 32 games with Loyola (Chicago) this AY. The junior guard earned All Atlantic 10 second team honors this AY. Next AY will be his senior and final year of college ball.
(6) White originally committed to Kansas early on his high school career, then opted to go to USC instead. From there he transferred to Louisville, then to Illinois. He will finally finish his senior season at KANSAS.
(7) At St. Bonaventure Council was third team All A-10, leading the A-10 in steals with 72 and scoring in double figures in 29 games, including all A-10 league contests. He played his junior season at Wagner College, where he was All Northeastern Conference 1st team, leading Wagner to the NEC title and the NCAA Tournament in 2024. He spent his first two years of college as a two time NJCAA Division 1 first team All-American at Monroe College, which is why he still has eligibility left despite being a senior.
(8 ) Allen hails from Ochai Agbaji's Oak Park HS in KCMO, where he helped lead his teammates and Missouri Class 6 COY Sherron Collins to the 2025 Class 6 title. He is literally "off the radar", with no ratings on any of the major services. Self & Co figure "He had a great high school career at Oak Park and has been well coached by our own Kansas alum Sherron Collins. We feel Corbin can be a contributor in time and we look forward to helping him develop and watching his progress." KUAthletics.com link
(9) Four * SG Kohl Rosario reclassified to Class of 2025 from 2026. He was ranked 27 by Rivals and 45 by 247Sports in the 2026 class, but nothing is available for where he would be in the 2025 class. He was one of the fastest rising members of 2026 before opting to reclassify and commit to Kansas.
(10) Paul Mbiya (I believe pronounced "m-BEE-ya") is one of the top big men in the international ranks, playing the past 2 years in the French professional basketball league. He was *the* international big that Self wanted, and finally got after Mbiya decommitted from NC State.

RECRUITING CLASS RANKING UPDATED 2025-06-25
None of these class rankings include Bryson Tiller, as he enrolled JAN2025, technically making him a 2024 recruit. With him KU potentially had a Top 10 class. Add in Kohl Rosario, who just reclassified from 2026 where he was a top 30 (Rivals)/top 50 (247S) recruit and again the class rankings would be higher. Include both and the 2025 rankings could conceivably be Top 5.
28 - Rivals
34 - 247Sports.com
18 - ESPN.com (excluding Tiller; but see * below, which would apply to Rivals|On3 and 247 as well)
28 - On3.com (now owns Rivals.com)
?? - RSCI (not published until recruiting season is over)
*from ESPN.com 2025 Team High School Recruiting Rankings
18. Kansas Jayhawks
January ranking: 15

Top recruit: Darryn Peterson (No. 2)

After entering November without a single commitment from the 2025 class, Bill Self and Kansas had a fantastic three-week surge that vaulted the Jayhawks into the rankings.

The first domino was the best of the group, with Peterson choosing the Jayhawks over Ohio State, Kansas State and USC. He is the best guard in the 2025 class and one of the best scorers coming out of high school. He will be joined in Lawrence by fast-rising forward Samis Calderon (No. 87), two-sport star Jaden Nickens and late signee Corbin Allen.

With top-30 prospect Bryson Tiller included, this could have been a top-10 class, but Tiller enrolled early at Kansas to redshirt and prepare for next season.

OFFERED (Multiple sources; where available, National Rank & Ratings are Rivals.)
The following list contains only recruits with a reported KANSAS offer (per Rivals, 247Sports, ESPN)
or a listing on JayhawkSlant's "Hoops Hot Board".
(NB: ! after Position indicates recruit is listed on JayhawkSlant's “Hoops Hot Board”; !! means Shay likes him despite no reported offer at posting time.)
As of the update noted below, it is far more likely Self & Co pursue transfer players who withdrew from the NBA draft and International prospects rather than any previously offered high school players. I do not believe the services update their records when a program withdraws an offer, which is why these still show up on Rivals and other sites.

DEPARTING & RETURNING AY2024-25 PLAYERS
___________________________________________________________________________________
DEPARTING PLAYERS AFTER AY2024-25 ((S)cholarship, (W)alk-on, *past red shirt)
NB: Due to COVID19, the NCAA approved an additional year of eligibility and another year to use it in for all AY2020-21 players. The first “Super Seniors” did not count against original team scholarship limits for AY2021-22 to give programs some flexibility in transitioning to the new rule. All subsequent year Super Seniors through AY2025-26 (final year for redshirted SSrs) count against roster and scholarship totals. A © indicates a player eligible for an extra Covid year. See RCB: COVID-19 Super Seniors Basic Info for a more through explanation.

RETURNING PLAYERS and AY2024-25 STATUS by Class ((S)cholarship, (W)alk-on), *Redshirt)
NOTE WELL: I am including here the AY2024-25 walk-ons who will still have eligibility left for AY2025-26. With the NCAA rules changing effective AY2025-26 to eliminate scholarship caps - setting scholarships allowed equal to the maximum allowed roster size (15 for both Men's and Women's hoops) - walk-ons will essentially disappear in the future.
However, the court settlement of House v NCAA et al. grandfathers in walk-ons from AY2024-25 who still have eligibility left until their eligibility expires (i.e., they won't count against the new Scholarship|Roster limits as long as the remain walk-ons for the rest of their college careers). But after this group is gone, it looks like our cherished walk-ons will be a thing of the past.

SENIORS
G/F Justin Cross* (W) (grandfathered)

SCHOLARSHIP|ROSTER OPENINGS AVAILABLE UPDATED 2025-06-15
14 (Final installment of the NCAA penalty to be taken AY2025-26, when scholarship and roster limits change to 15 players)
- 4 returning COUNTERS (after known EEs/Transfers out)
= 10 openings (after known EEs/Transfers Out)
- 9 new COUNTERS on roster (HS recruits, transfers in, upgraded walk-ons)
∴ 1 OPENINGS available as of update date, as the final payment on the NCAA penalty does indeed also impact the roster limit as well as the scholarship limit. This means that Jaden Nickens, even though counting against KUFB for scholarship purposes, will also count against KU Men's Hoops roster (now=scholarship) limit. (That just seems wrong to me. It effectively means two-sport athletes cost the school 2 scholarships, even though the school only has to pay for one.)

KUMBB used all 13 scholarships for AY2024-25, so the final penalty scholarship loss must be taken in AY2025-26. The changes in scholarship caps and roster limits for AY2025-26 are part of a major settlement agreement involving three lawsuits against the NCAA and the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC: House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA. Accordingly, KU will have 14 scholarship players (+1 walk-on available if the roster limits are not impacted by the penalty) next AY, then be at a full 15 player roster and 15 scholarships possible starting AY2026-27.

The thread origin post has been updated to add a fourth 2025 signee, dual sport athlete Jaden Nickens (6-3/170).
Per NCAA rules his scholarship will count against football, not men's basketball, so he will be treated as a walk-on for hoops purposes.

To hopefully make it easier to read and maintain, I have also reformatted the post into the following section order -

The origin post has been updated to include the latest recruiting and transfer portal info as of today.

TLDR:
Corbin Allen, Oak Park HS, KCMO added to the signed HS recruits list.

Available scholarships: down to 2 of 14 still available to fill, preferably with a serviceable backup big man and a good shooting stretch forward, both who may come from the international ranks at this point.

This academic year will see the last payment on the NCAA scholarship penalty, so next year the roster|scholarship limit will be the full 15.

And one final note -

Some folks are talking about the relatively poor team high school recruiting ranking given to KU for 2025.

It is important to note that Bryson Tiller, who Self says will be good to go come the fall, was originally part of the 2025 ratings. Each service removed him from the 2025 class when he enrolled early in Jan 2025. None of the other services noted this, but ESPN did. ESPN Recruiting noted that with Tiller KU would probably have had a Top 10 class for 2025. Logically the same argument can be extended to the other service rankings as well, even if they chose not to address the issue.

The OP was updated to reflect -

The settlement of House v NCAA grandfathering all AY2024-25 walk-ons for the duration of their remaining eligibility. This means that Justin Cross, Wilder Evers, Will Thengvall and Noah Shelby can be on the roster but won’t count against the new roster limits.

Earlier this year after the season was over there was talk that Shelby would be on scholarship in AY2025-26. Apparently that won’t be happening. As a result of his staying on as a grandfathered walk-on, as of COB yesterday KU has 3 scholarship|roster openings available.
