==================================
At the Men’s Basketball banquet Self inferred KU could use 13 scholarships this year if needed, taking the last NCAA penalty hit in AY2025-26 instead of now.

That means KU currently has 1 ride to offer without anyone having to leave. 7 returnees, 3 HS recruits signed and 2 portal commitments = 12 fills.

Should anyone opt to leave there will be more rides available.

SCHOLARSHIP RETURNEES as of SITREP date/time
Dickinson
Harris
Adams
Furphy?

BLUF
1. KU has 2 available scholarships as of 2024-04-16 with Furphy entering NBA draft.

2. Current NCAA deadlines are structurally unfair to student-athletes and need to be adjusted to eliminate the issue.

DISCUSSION
Self has said that he will treat anyone entering the NBA draft or transfer portal as “gone” and recruit to replace them.

Self has also indicated, however, that if someone he wants back decides to return, he’ll find a place for them.

Johnny Furphy testing the NBA draft waters means Self is now recruiting to fill two (2) available scholarships for next season.

May 1 - last day for undergrads to enter the transfer portal and be automatically eligible to play this fall.

May 29 - NCAA deadline for NBA draft testers with remaining eligibility to withdraw from the draft and retain that eligibility.

So, if it looks like JF may opt to return and Self has already filled those 2 openings, where does the needed scholarship for JF come from? Someone transfering?

But to be automatically eligible to play next fall any potential undergraduate transfer must make that decision to transfer 4 weeks before the NBA draft entrant must make his decision to stay in or withdraw.

Clearly the transfer portal entry deadline needs to be at least 2 business days after the draft withdrawal deadline. And the latter is currently set at 10 days after the NBA Combine ends.

Make the latter deadline 5 days after the combine ends and close the portal 2 days later.

End result is most situations are resolved 3 days before the current draft withdrawal deadline.

Based on your wording, it seems to me that the deadline is for ENTERING the portal, not selecting your team. What's the deadline for selecting a team and remain eligible for next fall? Unless that's what you meant and misspoke...

Yes, the deadline is for entering the portal, declaring your intention to leave.

There is no deadline for selecting a new team.

AND the NCAA voted on Wednesday on emergency legislation to loosen the restrictions on multiple undergraduate transfers. Undergraduate student-athletes may transfer every year and be immediately eligible to play next season. The one restriction of note is you can’t transfer midseason and immediately play at your new school.
ESPN: NCAA new transfer rules

Excerpt
The decision isn't final until the meetings end on Thursday, and the rule still needs to be formally approved by the NCAA's executive board Monday, but that is expected to be a formality. The rule will provide immediately eligibility to any athletes who have transferred during the 2023-24 academic year…

The article specifically addresses NCAA football, but the new bylaw, which is expected to be rubber stamped by the NCAA executive board on Monday, applies to all sports.
