The AY2022-23 ATWP thread can be found here.

EDITED 2023-10-12 to reflect the results of the NCAA case against KANSAS.
Link: INDEPENDENT RESOLUTIONS PANEL DECISION Case No. 00874 University of Kansas 2023-10-11
EDIT 2023-12-16: Added a link to the subsequently published NCAA 2023-24 Division 1 Men's Basketball Records Book. and ensured starting records here agreed with it.

Our DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS
finished 28-8 and Big 12 CHAMPIONS for the AY2022-23 season, but fell short of their goals of winning the Big 12 Tournament and repeating as NCAA Tournament champion. :(
(Yeah, I know, I just could not resist one last opportunity to post DNCKJ again! ROCK CHALK!)

But on the plus side, before the vacating of 15 Wins from Spring 2018 in which the now declared ineligible Silvio DeSousa played, our Jayhawks remained perched atop the leader board for All-Time Winningest D1 Programs. You may recall that KANSAS passed Kentucky during the 2022 NCAA Tournament, finishing 4 up on the Wildcats (THANK YOU AGAIN, Saint Peter’s Peacocks!). KANSAS and Kentucky entered the 2023 NCAA Tournament with KANSAS having extended it’s lead to 10 games... and while credit must be given to Arkansas for ending our Jayhawks time in the NCAAT in the second round, we must also extend a grudging “Thanks” to Kansas State, who extended their excellent AY2022-23 season by doing the same for their fellow Wildcats of Lexington, who thus still trailed the leader by 10.

Back on the downside, the vacating of those 15 Wins drops KANSAS back into 2nd place, now 5 games back of UK.

UNC, #3 on the ATWP leader board, had a subpar season and opted not to participate in the post season when they did not make the NCAAT. They trail the leader by 42 32, after leading KANSAS as recently as the end of AY2009-10. KANSAS passed the tarred ones in AY2010-11 and has yet to look back. (NB: KANSAS and the tarred ones have met 4 times since the coaching changes in 2003 and KANSAS has won them all: 2008 Final Four; 2012 Elite 8, 2013 Sweet 16 and 2022 NC game.)

Duke made the NCAAT, but like KANSAS and UK did not get past Round 2, falling to Tennessee.

The only Top 5 member to get to the Sweet 16 was newest Top 5 member UCLA, who fell to Gonzaga in that round.

Other than KU extending it’s lead (before losing it with the IRP decision) and UCLA passing Syracuse and Temple to move up from #7 to #5 on the ATWP list, the other ATWP item of note is that Indiana finished the postseason all alone in 10th place on the list because the Tigers of Princeton sharpened their claws on the Wildcats of Arizona1 in round 1 before mauling the tiggers of mOO in round 2 of the NCAAT. (I had hopes that Princeton would make the South Regional Finals, but Creighton spoiled that daydream. >sigh<)

And finally, now 5-time NCAA Tournament champion UConn, who have been playing basketball since 1901 -- in this listing only KU (1899), Temple (1895) and Notre Dame (1897) began playing earlier -- finally reached win 1800, but are still in 25th place, 6 games back of Princeton on the ATWP list.

BUT ENOUGH LOOKING BACK!
(“Too many people looking back!” - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, “Live Bullet”, one of *the* best rock concert albums ever made, if you have not heard it and you love rock and roll, check it out... but I digress...)

LOOKING AHEAD, this season it is POSSIBLE – not likely, but *possible* – for three programs to join the prestigious 2000 Wins club – one for the second time!

WINS NEEDED TO REACH 2000 WINS in AY2023-24
14 UCLA
23 Temple
27 Syracuse

Wish them luck… except when they are playing ANY Big 12 team (well, okay, wish them luck against tu and OU, too!)

1Does not include the impact of the December 2022 IARP ruling against Arizona, which cost UA 50 wins. See the November 14 2023 ATWP post for the updated standings with the November 2023 publication of the AY2023-24 Men's Basketball Division 1 Records Book.

NOTES
1. The table reflects the 2023 NCAA IRP vacating of 15 wins from the KANSAS 2017-18 season from those 20 games in which retroactively declared ineligible Silvio De Sousa played.
2. The table shows the official NCAA record for Syracuse, which excludes the 101 wins the NCAA vacated in 2015.
If those wins had not been vacated Syracuse would be #5 at 2074 964 0.683.
3. Connecticut, which played it’s first season in 1901, is the only program with 4 or more NCAA Tournament titles not in the Top 10. In the Top 10 only KU (1899), Temple (1895) and Notre Dame (1897) began playing earlier, and only KU, Temple, Syracuse and Indiana - plus #24 Princeton - have played more seasons.
4. Arizona had 50 wins vacated by the NCAA after last year's records book was published. As a result they have dropped out of contention for the Top 10 for the near future.

An aside focusing on the KANSAS v UNC competition over the years.
EDITED TO REFLECT THE IMPACT OF THE 2023-10-11 IRP DECISION

ALL TIME WON-LOST RECORDS SINCE SELF BECAME KU HEAD COACH
YEAR WON LOST WON LOST COMMENT
2003 N Carolina 1808 666 KANSAS 1801 753 KU trailed UNC by 7
2011 N Carolina 2033 728 KANSAS 2038 799 KU passed UNC, led by 5
2023 N Carolina 2343 852 KANSAS 2385 885 KU leads UNC by 42 (2370 885 / 27 post IRP decision)
Change 03-23 535 186 584 132 569 132 after the IRP decision

From 2003-2023, KANSAS won 49 34 more games and lost 54 fewer games than UNC. Furthermore, in 4 meetings since Roy left for UNC, all in the NCAA Tournament, UNC has not defeated KANSAS (Roy 0-3, Hubert Davis 0-1).

The Curse of The Traitor Smith?
Probably not, given Roy won 3 NCs with them.
But if no one else ever does, I'm claiming naming it first!

I just finished editing the origin post for the upcoming season (and the first comment post as well) for the impact of yesterday's IRP decision resulting in KANSAS having to vacate the 15 wins it earned in Spring 2018 in which the retroactively declared ineligible Silvio DeSousa played.

Having not looked at it in a while, I am bemused by the all the neat info it contains.

I hope you enjoy it (except for the obvious, of course!).

And PLEASE -- let me know if you have any questions or spot any errors!
I've tested negative for COVID-19 for 3 straight tests now, but I swear I'm still a little brain fogged from it.
But other than that, I Feel Fine! (Lip sync, it, boys!)

The NCAA has published its AY2023-24 Records book , and there were some significant adjustments to the records beyond the KU vacated 15 Wins (V15W).

Arizona got zapped a total of 50 wins for 2016-17 and 2017-18 violations and so dropped from #11 to #19 and out of my tracking for the Top 10.
The NCAA counted one Indiana loss as a win, and a Princeton victory as a loss, and fixed those records for this year (important as UConn is hot on Princeton's heels!).
And I had a formula error in the UCLA computations that overstated their losses. The new table reflects the proper #s.

If those wins had not been vacated Syracuse would be #5 with almost 2100 wins.
3. Connecticut, which played it’s first season in 1901, is the only program with 4 or more NCAA Tournament titles not in the Top 10. In the Top 10 only KU (1899), Temple (1895) and Notre Dame (1897) began playing earlier, and only KU, Temple, Syracuse and Indiana - and #24 Princeton as well - have played more seasons.

Loving that after the NCAA ruling we were down 5 and yet not even at the halfway point in the season, we've cut Kensucky's lead to 3. It will feel absolutley awesome to pass them AGAIN. Hoping we get it done this season, and it certainly is possible.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to 2024!

For this first ATWP post of the new year I'd thought I'd do something a little different.

Below are the TOP 25 ALL-TIME WINNINGEST PROGRAMS to lay out just who are the denizens of that realm.

POINTS OF INTEREST

•Kansas begins 2024 just 3 wins behind UK, having gained 2 wins on the Wildcats in the non-conference portion of this season's schedule. Through December 31, 2023 Kansas has not lost ground to ANY of the Top 25.

•Syracuse begins 2024 just 1 game behind Temple for 6th place. Despite some lackluster seasons in the final years of Jim Boeheim steering the ship, Syracuse still has managed to pick up better than 3 wins a season on Temple since the NCAA 2015 sanctions vacated 101 wins from Orange history. That penalty dropped the Orange from 5th place to 6th, 30 games behind the then new #5 Temple. Both still have a chance to reach the 2000 wins plateau this season (Syracuse for the 2nd time, and I like their chances better). In AY2022-23 UCLA passed both Syracuse and Temple for 5th place.

•UCLA has not had a great start this AY, but still has a chance to reach the 2000 wins level before it's over. Have to wonder if Mick Cronin is in trouble the way things are going this season?

•New Big 12 member Cincinnati has reached the 1900 wins level.

•Texas, Illinois, future Big 12 member Utah, Western Kentucky and new Big 12 member BYU all have a chance to reach 1900 wins in AY2023-24.

•Villanova is the only other team with even a remote chance of hitting 1900 wins this AY. They'd have to run the table the rest of the season and post-season to do so.

•West Virginia is in bad company so far this season, joining UCLA and Notre Dame as the only members of the Top 25 with losing records to date.

•Finally, Michigan State's stumble out of the gate has allowed 12-1 Princeton to tie the Spartans in wins but pass them for 23rd place based on the Tigers better historical winning percentage. #25 UConn trails both programs by 8 wins, 1819 to 1811, as the new year begins.

NOTES
If those wins had not been vacated Syracuse would be #5 with almost 2100 wins.
3. Connecticut, which played its first season in 1901, is included in this table because it is the only program with 4 or more NCAA Tournament titles not in the Top 10. In the Top 10 only KU (1899), Temple (1895) and Notre Dame (1897) began playing earlier, and only KU, Temple, Syracuse and Indiana - and #24 Princeton as well - have played more seasons.

In this first full week of 2024 it is notable that most of the top 10+ are doing well as conference play begins.

Programs with unsat starts so far are --
#5 UCLA (6-9)
#6 Temple (8-7)
#8 Notre Dame (6-9)
and to a lesser extent
#24 Michigan St (9-6)

The rest of the Top 10+ have already reached double digits wins.

Our Jayhawks have gained two wins on UK so far this AY, but as UK seems to have improved and conference play has begun, KU will be doing well to end the regular season just 3 back. Then we can hope for UK to bomb and KU to excel in the post-season.

For this first ATWP post of February I'd thought I'd update and publish the full Top 25 again, so here ya go...

Below are the TOP 25 ALL-TIME WINNINGEST PROGRAMS in Men's Division 1 Basketball thru 2024-02-04

POINTS OF INTEREST

• #2 Kansas started AY2023-24 at 5 wins behind #1 UK. The Jayhawks gained 2 wins on the Wildcats in the non-conference portion of this season's schedule, and currently have gained a 3rd W this past week as KU went 1-1 (L @ISU, W v HOU) while UK went 0-2, losing at home to both Florida and Tennessee (Thank you, Rick Barnes!)
KU is currently 2 wins behind UK.

• #5 UCLA (1997), #6 Syracuse (1987) and #7Temple (1985) all still have a chance to reach the 2000 wins plateau this season, Syracuse for the 2nd time. In AY2022-23 UCLA passed both Syracuse and Temple for 5th place, and this season Syracuse has passed Temple to climb back to 6th. I had expected UCLA to have passed the 2000 wins level by now. I don't think anyone expected them to have an 11-11 start to this season.

• 1900 Wins: Both #11 Purdue and new Big 12 member #12 Cincinnati have reached 1900 wins this season. There are 5 more teams that have good to very slim chances of reaching 1900 Wins before AY2023-24 ends: #13 Illinois (1895), #14 Texas (1894), #15 Utah (1890), #16 W. Kentucky (1887) and new Big 12 member #17 BYU (1885).

• More passings: Arizona (17-5) has won 5 more games than Villanova (12-10) so far this season to pass them for 18th place; Washington (12-10) has moved into 20th place, 3 wins ahead of WVU (8-14).

• More West Virginia - the Mountaineers are in bad company so far this season, grouped with UCLA, Temple, Notre Dame and Penn as the only members of the Top 25 without winning records to date.

• Finally, #23 Michigan State (1825) is back ahead of #24 Princeton (1823), while #25 UConn (1820) is doing its best to overtake them both in AY2023-24.

NOTES
If those wins had not been vacated Syracuse would be #5 with almost 2100 wins.
3. Connecticut, which played its first season in 1901, is the only program with 4 or more NCAA Tournament titles not in the Top 10. In the Top 10 only 4 programs -- Kansas, Syracuse, Temple and Indiana -- have played more seasons than #25 UConn. In the Top 24 there are 11 programs who have played more seasons (add Purdue, Cincinnati, BYU, Washington, Penn, Michigan State and Princeton to the first 4 named).
