I feel this post should start with something like a Ghostbusters ad.

Are you troubled by strange noises at all hours of the day?
Do you experience feelings of dread when you see purple, gold or red?
Have you or any of your family ever been hassled by fans of rival programs?

If the answer is yes, then don't wait another minute. Pick up your phone and check out the Rock Chalk Board!

Our courteous and efficient staff is here to help you debunk those inane opposition fan theories.

So, yeah, the refs didn’t call any fouls late in the Texas Tech game. There’s been all kinds of comments by paid media types and opposition fans about how KANSAS only wins because they “get the calls”.

First, some data…

Since Dec 1, 2022 (vs Seton Hall, Missouri, Indiana, Harvard, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech)
KU Opp 81 fouls
KU 112

KU Opp FT 112
KU 69

Damn refs. (Source: JayhawkSlant)

Second…

I went back and in slow motion watched all the action - live and replays - regarding the controversial end game sequence in the Texas Tech game. Here is what I saw.

Isaacs catches the passed ball outside the three point line near the United logo. Pettiford is on him. Isaacs breaks toward the lane, taking one dribble. Then as he goes to cut in between Pettiford and KJ Adams he momentarily has both his right hand and his left hand on the ball at the same time, constituting a double dribble. No call. He makes his cut into the lane, which has been cleared by Batcho using a moving screen to back both the defending Wilson and himself off balance (at which point, as both Wilson and Batcho are falling, Wilson briefly grabs Batcho’s arm to try to keep himself upright) and from one side of the paint to the other, with Wilson eventually regaining his balance all the way back at the base line while Batcho has fallen to the floor.

KJ gets a hand solidly on the ball to dislodge it as Isaacs enters the lane. While that is happening, Isaacs is pushing Pettiford back with his right arm to Pettiford’s chest, and as a result they knock legs. Isaacs has now lost control of himself and the ball as he runs into McCullar but McCullar manages to stay upright. As Isaacs falls the ball goes between McCullar’s legs as Pettiford and Isaacs fall to the floor in the paint. McCullar turns, grabs the ball and passes to KJ, who takes off down the court and scores on the dunk. And yes, Batcho clearly fouls Adams and Fran even says so In so many words.

To recap.
Double dribble by Isaacs not called.
Moving screen by Batcho not called.
The entanglement with Pettiford created by Isaacs, not called.
The knocking of knees was a good no call IMO, it clearly was NOT a trip by Pettiford.
A definite body slam of a foul by Batcho on KJ not called.

So by my slow motion review, all the fouls that could have been called would have properly been called against Texas Tech.

But the refs didn’t call Tech fouls all game (just 6 called, to 11 for KU), so no one should be surprised when the refs called none in that sequence that late in the game. They were just being consistent… consistently bad, but consistent.

Just in case you need it.
Just show them this.
You’re welcome.

Thanks HE. Pretty much my sentiments, but your play-by-play certainly helps.

Generally speaking, complaining about the refs is a waste of time. A good coach will just tell you to put yourself in a position (i.e. up by 10 with less than a minute to go) where the refs CAN'T determine the outcome.

Nevertheless, the fact that the refs only called one foul on Tech in the first half tells me that either Tech is really amazing at not fouling, or that they had their blinders on. But as you say, conistentcy (consistently good or consistently bad) is its own virtue.

I concur with all that has been posted re the refs for the KU-TTU game; but in general is seems that the refs were “letting ‘‘em play” in the games last night. I did not see o-UT vs. Grapes, seems like both teams left their defense at home.

Thank you Eric...

I was in the throws of battling my very first bout with the CoVid Virus and during the enire game I was really not paying to much attention to the game and in the waning minutes I just totally tuned it out.

I'm much better now and on medication so I'll be primed for the West Virgina game this weekend!

Glad you’re feeling better, Jay!

Anna & I had COVID19 back in September. Thankfully fully vaxxed and antivirals right away kept symptoms to a minimum. Hope you’re good to go ASAP!

I didn’t go back and replay in slo-mo but when they showed the replay in game, my thought was Isaacs cleared out Pettiford with a right arm. My take was Isaacs was the offending party as far as he and Pettiford. But the other issue is, having lived my entire adult life in Texas and Oklahoma, I am used to the “KU gets all the calls” mantra. When I put that through my translator app here is what comes out, “whaaa whaaa, mommy make KU play fair. He is such a bully. Whaaa whaaa.”

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!

Before we start comparing foul counts, I'd be interested in how many times each team attempted a shot near the basket (driving or otherwise) because that's where most fouls are committed. 3pt shooting teams are far less likely to draw fouls than teams that attack the basket (or get offensive rebounds and attempt stick-backs).

That out of the way, I found it interesting that no one pointed out the obvious (to me) no-call when KJ got the ball in the middle of the lane with a clear path to the basket and appeared to have been held at the ankle to prevent an easy dunk...and he missed the finger roll. I was 100% confident that merited free throws as the ankle grab clearly affected play.
