No Sunday games scheduled since Tarleton State @KU was cancelled, so posting a day earlier than usual.

KU leading the Top 5 field so far this year.

Kensucky continues to (now 1-4 after losing to Notre Dame today), and although continuing this trend would be bad for the KU SOS, I would love for it to trend on.

The tarred ones manage to hang on to win in a late scheduled, squeezed in game against NC-Central.

Puke (2-2) has cancelled its remaining nonconference schedule, next plays 12-16 @ND.

Temple has yet to play due to COVID19 issues. First game to be 12-19.

Syracuse is 4-1, with its only loss being against the only Top 25 team it has played (#21 Rutgers 79-69).

I usually compare my historical data with the latest NCAA Records book before making the first post of the new season. Realizing I had not yet done so this year, I did so this morning and discovered a discrepancy between the 2020 and 2021 NCAA D1 Men's Basketball Records Books.

The tarred ones gained a win from one year to the next that had nothing to do with their last season record.

So I emailed the NCAA about the discrepancy (text follows):
EMAIL TEXT BEGINS
===============================================================
QUESTION: Discrepancy in NCAA 2021 Division 1 Men's Basketball Records Book

Comparing the Subject book information with the NCAA 2020 Division 1 Men's Basketball Records book, topic: All-Time Wins list

NORTH CAROLINA
2021 Record Book W 2276 L 818
2020 Record Book W 2261 L 799

the difference____ W 15 L 19
Actual 2020 record W 14 L 19
So why the "extra" win in the 2021 Record Book?

Research reveals that the UNC 2020 Media Guide record is 2261-799 (page 3), while the UNC 2021 Media Guide reports the 2276-818 data (page 3), which includes the “extra” win.

Further research shows that the UNC 2020 Media Guide (page 89) reports the 1919-20 season record to be 7-9, while the UNC 2021 Media Guide (page 88) shows the 1919-20 season record to be 8-9.

Clearly this is the "extra" win in the All Time Wins total, but where did it come from?
Did UNC or NCAA historians find a previously unreported UNC Win for the 1919-20 season?
Or is this simply a data input/transference error?

Thank you.
===============================================================
END EMAIL TEXT

I got a same day response from the NCAA courtesy of JD Hamilton.
Paraphrased --
Since the publication of the 2020 records books, the UNC SID staff found a game that was not in the history books.
UNC hosted the Leaksville YMCA on Dec. 13, 1919, winning 35-22.
The 1919-20 season record was therefore adjusted from 7-9 to 8-9, and
The all-time record for the tarred ones starting with AY2020-21 was adjusted to 2276-818.
End Paraphrased reply

Rather than edit the previous posts, I am adding the additional win with this post.

Saw this on JayhawkSlant. Really cool graphic that is best watched on a desktop or other larger screen computer.

Shows KU on top of the leader board from 1941 to 1946 and then 1956 to 1961.

After that KU dropped off the pace until settling in second place behind Kentucky from 1968 to 1979, when the tarred ones under the future Traitor Smith passed the Jayhawks. In 1981-82 St John's and Oregon State pass KU for 3rd and 4th place. Then KU passes Oregon State for 4th by the end of the 1983-84 season, and St John's for 3rd by the end of the 1986-87 season.

KU stayed in third for 24 seasons, ending the 2009-10 season 1 game back of the tarred ones and passing them for second in the 2010-11 season, where the Jayhawks have been ever since. And entering the 2020-21 season KU was 16 games behind UK, and so far have cut that lead to 11, the closest the Jayhawks have been since the end of the 2012-13 season when UK's lead had been cut to 10, 2111 to 2101.

In the meantime UK had been in first after passing Oregon State in the 1966-67 season, until the tarred ones took over first at the end of the 1989-90 season. UK moved back into first in the 1994-95 season and has been there ever since.

You can watch the video even if you do not have a Twitter account. Just click on the link here. If the video in the pop up page does not start automatically, just click on the video to start it.

Enjoy!

P.S. - Discerning readers will note that the graphics creator has given UK two more wins at the end of 2019-20 than are listed in the NCAA 2021 Records Book.

Also from JayhawkSlant, a bit of history from poster Mark933. He provides some insight (in response to another poster asking about UK adding "something like 30 wins" to its record over time) to go along with the graphic... (Pay site link)

The whole “Kentucky finds wins” tends to get exaggerated. Kentucky added two wins (one from 1903 and one from 1907) to its total in 1969 and another (from 1914) to its total in 1990. It’s not unusual for schools to research their programs early years and find unrecorded games. Kansas has done it, UNC has done it. The reason Kentucky got so much attention for it was the timing.

During the 1968-69 season KU and Kentucky (and Oregon State) were closing in on 1,000 wins in a well-publicized race. KU was leading 997 to 995 when Kentucky announced they had found two wins. KU wasn’t happy about it (both Max Falkenstien and Ted Owens mention it in their books), but they were legit games that they had to prove to the NCAA.

During the 1989-90 season UNC had finally caught Kentucky in wins and at the end of the season UNC led 1,479 to 1,478. During the summer of 1990 Kentucky announced an additional win. The win had actually been added to Kentucky’s records in 1985 but had never been included in their win total.

Both the times Kentucky made changes were at points when there was a lot of attention to the all-time wins race and because of this it seems the number of wins UK added gets exaggerated.

UNC added five wins to its total in 1991. And, as LTCUSARet diligently noted above, UNC add another win just recently.

Kansas has also adjusted its historical records, which I think very few people are aware of. James Naismith’s record used to be listed as 53-55 instead of the 55-60 listed now. These changes occurred in the early to mid-1970s and were never announced in the media, as far as I can tell. The only way you can find that there were changes is by comparing KU’s historical records listed in the annual media guides.

Once again no Sunday games, so another Saturday post.

KANSAS continues to roll, Kensucky continues to flounder after losing to the tarred ones today, Duke won at Notre Dame then the previously postponed Gardner-Webb game was cancelled outright, Temple finally played -- and won -- a game and Syracuse beat the Northeastern Huskies (aside: I always chuckled at the realization that Jim Calhoun went from the Huskies to the Huskies in his coaching career) before clawing back to win in OT against the Buffalo Bulls.

No Sunday games, another Saturday post.

KANSAS will end calendar year 2020 just 9 games back from Kensucky after KANSAS beat WVU in AFH and Kensucky -- for the first time since 1911 -- started its season 1-6 with a rivalry loss at Louisville.

Missed last Sunday, apologies.

Of note in the table:

1. KU really needs to buckle down both for themselves and to take advantage of a horrible year (to date) for Kentucky (and to continue to extend their Weeks in the Top 25 ranking record *and* have any chance of doing decent in the postseason tournaments -- winning begets winning).

2. The tarred ones seem to have found their gear (3-1 the last 4 games), and are tied with KU at 10-5.

3. Duke is bleah this year. May it tumble over into the next.

4. I would love to see Syracuse pass Temple to once again be #5 all time by the end of this postseason. It's a very long shot, but with 11 regular season games left the Orange are only 12 down to the Owls. Syracuse could win 8 of those games, leaving them needing 5 post-season wins to pass Temple if the Owls don't win another game. Temple is terrible this year, and , and on top of that keep having games cancelled for virus concerns. Again, a long shot, but I'm actually kind of hoping they pull it off.

Posting on Friday night as all on the list are finished for this week.

At this point the question the rest of this season is who will have another opportunity to play and who won't.
Duke has shut down due to COVID-19, but IMO in reality would not have made the NCAAs anyway.
KANSAS should be a 3 seed as long as they can meet the COVID-19 protocols.
UNC lost today, but they are solidly in,
Syracuse is presently a Lunardi "Last 4 In", but we'll find out on Sunday.
Neither Temple nor UK are NCAA dancing.
Temple has no chance of being an NIT selection, and I feel the same way about UK. Again, Sunday we will know.

Accordingly, KANSAS should finish its AY2020-21 campaign at least within 5 games of UK.

AY2020-21 KU OBJECTIVES:
20/63: Win KU's 20th Big 12 title in 25 Big 12 seasons, and NCAA best 63rd conference title in program history.
NOT THIS YEAR:( BUT still finished 2nd, which few believed would happen on February 7!
GREAT FINISH, KANSAS! NOW KEEP ON ROCK CHALKING! in the POST-SEASON!

With the 2020 post season cancelled due to the novel coronavirus, those objectives carryover to this post season.

12/29: Looking for KU's 12th Big 12 Tournament title, and 29th overall conference tournament title
(currently 11 Big 12 titles + 4 Big 8 postseason titles 1977-96 + 13 Big 6/7/8 Holiday Tournament titles 1947 to 1979).

COVID-19 again. Bah, humbug!

and

4/6: NCAA and overall National Championships to go with their COVID 2020 Consensus #1 final ranking.
