Below is a table showing the on average how far a team will go in the NCAA Tourney based on the preseason AP Rank. This is the actual data from the last 35 years (since 1985) when the tourney was expanded to 64 teams. The actual AP Poll has not been published, but ESPN has KU ranked No. 2. That means we would have a 14% probability of winning the NC and a 17% probability of playing in the NC Game, a 37% probability of making the Final Four and a 60% probability of making the Elite 8. Here are some interesting facts about preseason rankings and the NCAA Tourney.

-- Four preseason unranked teams have won the National Championship (Villanova-1985, Syracuse-2003, Florida-2006 and Connecticut-2011)
-- 6 preseason unranked teams have lost in the NC game
-- 11 preseason unranked teams have made it to the Final Four.
-- of the 851 teams to be in the preseason AP Poll since 1985, 133 (15.6%) did not make the tourney
-- Of these 133 teams that did not make the tourney, the most consistently overrated teams have been
-- Louisville (6 times)
-- Southern Cal (6 times)
-- Connecticut (5 times)
-- Notre Dame (5 times)
-- Oklahoima (5 times)
-- Syracuse (5 times)
-- Baylor (3 times)
-- Florida (3 times)
-- Georgetown (3 times)
-- Memphis (3 times)
-- Michigan (3 times)
-- Missouri (3 times)
-- UCLA (3 times)
-- 21 teams twice including North Carolina
-- Duke & Kentucky have each done this but Kansas never has.
-- 5 preseason top 5 teams have failed to make the tourney
-- Louisville ranked 2nd in 1987
-- Kentucky ranked 3rd in 2013
-- Indiana ranked 4th in 1985
-- LSU ranked 5th in 2007
-- Missouri ranked 5th in 2004
-- The preseason No. 1 team has made the final four just about 50% of the time.
-- Of the 35 years of preseason rankings
-- Duke 33 years
-- UNC 32 years
-- Kansas 31 years
-- Kentucky 31 years
-- Arizona 27 years
-- Syracuse 24 years
-- UCLA 24 years
-- Louisville 24 years
-- Michigan St. 21 years
-- Preseason No. 1 the most times
-- Duke 7 times
-- North Carolina 6 times
-- Arizona 3 times
-- Kansas 3 times
-- Kentucky 3 times
-- UNLV 2 times
-- Connecticut 2 times

Looking forward to taking on a young Dook team on November 5th at the Garden. Still debating whether I'll go in person, but it should be a game where we can knock off another blue blood head to head.
