"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"
There's a lot of talk going on about the possibility of Mitch "taking the Red"*
Sometimes it makes sense to me, but I'd rather sentimentally like to see him play so he can say he was an active part of this team this season and go out with a bang!
What say ye?!?
Rock Chalk!
*GOT fans understand.

This is an interesting question. A couple of things come to my mind that are related.
The young me we have coming in are not as highly regarded as we have had in the past. HCBS has rarely been one to give a lot of playing time to just anyone. He will need bodies to sub in to give the starters a breather and he tends to turn to guys whom he can trust. I am thinking Mitch would fall into that category.
The fact that none of these young men appear to be OAD's, or even two years and done, coach will need to bring them along slowly this year and next year would be when they could shine. As I write, I guess Mitch red-shirting would and could help with this second matter by giving leadership to these guys and backing them up when they make their sophomore mistakes.
That takes me back to the first thought. It likely depends on how much talent these new guys have and how much HCBS thinks they can contribute right away in game-time situations. Self has not always been patient with new guys. Mitch has not always been a "rock," but he knows the system and can deliver.
This year is an opportunity that this team needs to seize.
Just my two-cents.

I think with Mitch it is compared to the bigs this year. With Dok and Silvio maybe both leaving after this year I think it makes sense. If he is having a great time as a member of the KU BB team why not do it an extra year?

Mitch not only energizes the team, he energizes the fans. I think we need both this year with the lineup of new and "old" unproven and untested talent. Mitch never takes a day off while he's on the court. He makes mistakes, but he never seems to let that keep him from giving it his all. This year may be the best time for him to help the 'Hawks.

I have heard that has already started a Masters so by redshirting he would have his 5th year of college paid.
