"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"

Max was not only a gifted commentator but a dear, sweet man. Years ago after a Midnight Madness program, I saw him talking to a fan and waited several minutes for the chance to say hello. He caught my eye a few times before the fan left, letting me know, I thought, that he wouldn't just walk away but would stay and talk to me.
I don't remember what was said except that I told him how much I loved his broadcasting, and I probably stammered, as one tends to do in the presence of greatness. What I do recall was that he was kind and gracious.
I watched for him at every game and only after I spotted him could I dedicate my attention to the game itself.
Max, we are ever grateful for the gifts you gave to the athletes, the fans, and Kansas University itself.

For those of us who grew up in the KU listening area and are genetically programmed for all things KU......I recall listening to Max call games on the radio (yes, Brother Bay, there WAS TV then, the games were not televised!!!). Another grand memory of growing up in NE KS!!! I’ll miss seeing him as the cameras pan the sidelines.....you knew all is well with Max on the sidelines!
Also for you born and bred Kansans......do you recall the McElroy Scoreboard after the football games....also radio and I don’t recall the station. Always waited for the Slippery Rock score!

The end is nothing; the road is all.
-- Jules Michelet
Humor at a funeral is always needed. I'm a BIG radio fan (theater of the mind and all), nowadays called podcasts
RE; Max, a class act who had a GREAT run. RIP indeed,

He was a down home man on and off the mic. A true Kansan and seemed to make us listeners feel like a true friend. We were blessed. I have missed him.

,,,Max is one of my broadcasting idols. He was one of a few sportscasters, I wanted to pattern: 'my life is sports-sports is my life', after. I had a wonderful 40 year run in broadcasting. I mentored many younger broadcasters in sports, throughout my career. MAX RIP ;( thank you, texkan
