As noted in the pinned recruiting thread, Dotson has until tomorrow night to withdraw from the NBA draft to retain his eligibility and return to KU for his sophomore.

Surprisingly, in light of the atmosphere when he originally announced his intention to enter the draft, Q is apparently realistically facing that decision as well. Although he and his camp initially said the plan was always for him to be a One and Done, the odds that are floating around today after his NBA Combine experience are 50/50 he will return.

The real question on every KU fan's lips now is will Dotson actually return? With the deadline tomorrow, lots of people -- including fans of rival programs -- are figuratively holding their respective breaths waiting to learn Dotson's decision. With him, KU is realistically the Big 12 team to beat next year, and one good 3 point shooter away from a potential FF team. Without him... well, nobody really wants to think about that until they have to think about it.

JayhawkSlant senior writer Shay Wildeboor reports today that he spoke with Mr. Dotson and learned "A final decision will not be made until tomorrow. Devon will be home today and will discuss all information with family." kansas.forums.rivals.com/threads/got-a-c...rom-mr-dotson.78640/ (members only forum site)

Given the path taken in many recent KU events (the SDS experience being a finally positive exception), many in Jayhawk Nation (at least on other boards) are gnashing their teeth about how bad (relatively speaking) a recruiting year this has been, and that losing Dotson would be the nadir of it.

With 3 current signees, if both Dotson and Q stay in the draft, KU will still have 4 scholarships to fill for next year.
3 is the # if just one returns.
2 if they both return... which at this point might be the best for KU's fortunes -- and certainly (IMO) Q's.

Hampton's BFF Jalen Wilson, Rivals #47 6-18/210 SF who had committed to Michigan before John Beilein left for the Cavaliers, is still interested in KU and is visiting this weekend, with plans to visit ol' Roy next. Talk is that given each program's current roster, Jalen would most likely have more opportunity to play at KU than in Chapel Hill, but he could always end up deciding to stay with his initial pick of Michigan as well. It is no consolation that RJ said if he had gone to college his choice would have been KU, but maybe a good word for KU with his BFF could soften the blow of not getting Hampton (read on with your best memory of Bob Uecker) "juuuuust a bit"?

There are still a few grad transfers with decent 3 point reputations that might be interested in KU now that Hampton isn't coming here, so we'll see how that plays out. A couple of names that I have heard mentioned are 6-3/185 SG Jaevin Cumberland and 6-4/191 SG Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey.

There is also another highly ranked 2020 HS SG named Kyree Walker (6-5/205 Rivals #17) who won't know for sure if he will be reclassifying until after summer school is over, but KU has been recruiting him pretty hard, so if he does, who knows?

Bottom line for me, though, is that things are rather up in the air until we learn the status of Dotson and Grimes, especially Dotson.

Thankfully NLT 10:59 PM tomorrow the picture of how much work Self & Co still have to do to fill out next year's roster will be, one way or the other, much clearer.

Devon had his Pro Day today, and is heading home to Charlotte to discuss and decide with his folks. Good article, worth the read.

EXCERPT
(Father Dana Dotson said) difficulty scheduling Devon’s pro day and the timing of some of the feedback and reviews of his game made things play out a little slower than expected...

Today, the decision is about one thing and one thing only.

“Where’s he going to go,” said Dana, noting that Devon’s expected draft position would play the biggest role in his decision. “That’s what it all comes down to. But even with that, you still have to look at the specific situation and make sure it’s a good fit because the long term play is to make sure you’re ready and that you can have a career.”

After a teleconference tonight with his agent, Kevin Bradbury, to gain the last bit of NBA feedback available, the Dotson family will make the final decision on their own, together, possibly at the family’s kitchen table with a pizza and a few smiles.

“This hasn’t been anywhere near as stressful as recruiting was,” Dana said.

Like Dotson, both Dedric Lawson and Quentin Grimes also have until 10:59 p.m. Wednesday to pull their names out of the 2019 NBA Draft pool if so desired. But all indications, as of late Tuesday afternoon, were that Lawson plans to stay in and Grimes remains undecided.

your brief summary of next year's chances seem spot on to me. If Dotson is gone, who plays PG? Garrett? I figured when all this started that Dotson would surely be back, would just use the combine to see where he stands and what he needs to improve. Read that his Dad says their info is that he is a second round pick. I haven't seen his name on any draft lists. Nor Grimes. I did see Lawson at #60 on one. If Dotson leaves I think this team and Self are in real trouble.

“If Dotson leaves I think this team and Self are in real trouble.”

You’d better believe they are. Hoping against hope he returns, because otherwise our perimeter game looks to be horrific.
