Recruiting and NCAA doldrums, that is.

With no decision yet on Silvio’s appeal, this usually slow period seems even slower. Many undecided recruits, HS and transfer, are waiting to see who stays and who remains in the NBA Draft before deciding. That’s business as usual.

But the NCAA delaying a Silvio decision, when he is on record that “Yes, he stays, but no he goes”, is an additional factor for recruits like grad transfer TJ Holyfield, who wants to star in his last season in school.

Although NCAA guidelines (note “guidelines”, not “deadlines”) indicate that the decision should be made NLT May 17 (21 business days after receipt of the appeal), more and more people are pessimistically believing there won’t be a decision until after the deadline for Silvio to withdraw from the draft and retain his eligibility (May 29) has passed.

I remain hopeful we will hear something by May 17, preferably this week, but my reserve of hope is running low.

In the meantime, hopefully KU will get soon get good news from weekend visitor SG Rayjon Tucker (called by some gurus the best grad transfer in the portal this year). He has indicated he will make his decision in about a week.

Until then... summer books and impatiently waiting for the next Game of Thrones episode... and, for that matter, for George R.R. Martin to finish book 6 so he can get the book 7 series finale published. It’s been 8 years (it’s a Monday, so I’ll specify — 2011) since the publication of book 5 “A Dance With Dragons”. Come on, George, finish your masterpiece!

Though I spend little time on recruiting details anymore, I do note that our competition for players has significantly changed. My opinion is that we don't compete much at all with Duke, UNC or KY. If they want a kid, they get him and KU rarely is in the final picture.

But now, we're listed often with the likes of Memphis, Auburn, Texas Tech, Iowa State, and other traditionally non-blueblood programs. You would think that a kid with offers from these schools would jump at a KU offer as the historical leader of the pack. That's not happening now.

Overall I think a black cloud has hung over KU for a few years, including specific rumors of Self to specific NBA jobs, and it's going to take some time to get out from under that cloud.

I'd have to disagree with this. Yes Duke and Kentucky seem to get their pick of the top talent but just last year Grimes picked KU over Kentucky. I think each school is recruiting who they think would be the best fit for them. Josh Jackson was overall #1. He wasn't recruited by either Duke or Kentucky. Azubuike picked KU over Duke, Kentucky and Carolina. I could keep going if needed.

If you are talking about a cloud hanging over our heads since we went to the Final Four and this Adidas crap I guess I'd agree. I think we need to quit having issues with kids we select, like De Sousa and Preston. Overall. I think we are fine and Self has proven to be an excellent recruiter. And who really cares if Kentucky, UNC and Duke are getting the top talent. It's not working for them anyway. Duke has the most amazing freshman I've seen in years and couldn't get to the FF. Neither could Kentucky, nor UNC. So I say we just see who KU gets, love em and let it all work itself out.
