REMAINING SCHEDULES for BIG XII TOP TEAMS
thru WEDNESDAY 2019-02-27

All Top 5 teams are color coded and underlined.

What a Wednesday night! Two OT games where the favored home teams managed to survive against the solidly underdog visitors who came to town loaded for bear. (Yeah, I went there.B)).

And picture this -- this Saturday, if KU wins at OSU, Baylor wins at KSU and TCU wins against TT in Fort Worth, there can be a 4 way tie for first in the Big XII at the end of the day.

KANSAS STATE (11-4) 2 Home / 1 Road
MAR 2 (SAT) VS BAYLOR
MAR 4 (MON) AT TCU
MAR 9 (SAT) VS OKLAHOMA

Even with the loss to KU on Monday, KSU is guaranteed at least a share of the conference title if they can win their last three games despite now being tied with Tech after Wednesday. But arguably KSU still has more tough games ahead than Tech does, even though it has 2 home v 1 road games left compared to Tech's 1 home and 2 road gamess left, so KSU's chances of getting at least that tie are just slightly less than Tech's. KSU hosting Baylor at home and traveling to TCU before finishing at home against OU looks to be a smidge tougher than Tech: (1) going to TCU (tie with KSU schedule); (2) hosting Texas (tie with KSU hosting OU) and then (3) traveling to ISU (who has already lost to KSU, TCU and BU at home this year). It would be great if Kruger’s Kids could pull off the upset in Manhattan, No matter who does it, KU needs to win out and have the Cats -- and TT -- lose at least once more. Got to have a dream...

TEXAS TECH (11-4) 1 Home / 2 Road
MAR 2 (SAT) AT TCU
MAR 4 (MON) VS TEXAS
MAR 9 (SAT) AT IOWA STATE

After clobbering KU on Saturday and then enjoying the KU defeat of KSU on Monday, on Wednesday the Red Raiders tried -- and failed, darn it -- to lose to the Cowboys, who took TT to OT before losing in Lubbock. TT survived to go into Saturday’s game at TCU tied for the conference lead with KSU. If nothing else the Cowboys game showed a major weakness that every Big XII team not named Kansas historically has this time of year -- they often play poorly against teams not named KANSAS late in the season. Can either TCU or ISU playing at home — or even Texas playing in Lubbock— give TT the additional loss that KU needs to have in order to have a chance at a share of the title (allowing for another KSU loss as well)? The odds are still very good that there will be co-champions this year, with KU probably not one of them. Again, TT wins out and they are guaranteed to at least tie KSU for the crown -- unless someone else can defeat the Cats just one more time, allowing (mixing sports metaphors) TT to slide under the tag at home as sole champions..

KANSAS (10-5) 1 Home / 2 Road
MAR 2 (SAT) AT OKLAHOMA STATE
MAR 5 (TUE) AT OKLAHOMA
MAR 9 (SAT) VS BAYLOR

KANSAS continues to hold serve this year in AFH (16-0 at “home”, 15-0 in AFH, 3-0 at neutral sites and 2-7 in true road games), but must win two road games in a row before closing out the regular season in The Phog, and then still need help if they are to earn a share of the title this time around. Next up for the Jayhawks is the bal-chatri otherwise known as the treacherous OSU road game. I do not believe this game has ever been quite so critical for KU. All the projections I've seen show KU a huge favorite against OSU, but in Stillwater, especially this team this year, all bets are off in my book. The game against OU in Norman is just as critical should KU win in Stillwater, and amazingly to me KU is slightly favored despite it's road woes this year. Then there is Baylor in AFH for the finale, projected as another KU win. I'm dreaming of four straight strong defensive games to close out the regular season and keep the dream alive. One down, three to go...

BAYLOR (10-5) 1 Home / 2 Road
MAR 2 (SAT) AT KANSAS STATE
MAR 6 (WED) VS OKLAHOMA STATE
MAR 9 (SAT) AT KANSAS

Baylor scraped its knees at home in beating Texas. Despite being down 19 at one point, they got to OT where they won to stay tied with KU for third and a shot at a piece of the crown. Now they play at KSU (go, Bears!) and then what should be a respite in Stillwater (who should be due an off game after having played over their heads at TT, and almost surely doing the same this Saturday at home against KU) before finishing in the Phog against KU. The odds remain stacked against them finishing with even a piece of the crown.

IOWA STATE (9-6) 1 Home / 2 Road
MAR 2 (SAT) AT TEXAS
MAR 6 (WED) AT WEST VIRGINIA
MAR 9 (SAT) VS TEXAS TECH

Another home win Monday night keeps the Cyclones hanging on by the skin of their teeth. They still have the arguably easiest schedule left, but they have to win two road games in two traditionally tough venues before facing what projects to be the most significant stumbling block left for them — Texas Tech in Ames. And then, with just 3 game left for everybody now, they would still need KSU to lose two more games, TT to lose two more games (including the Ames game), and KU and Baylor at least one each, to manage a share of the title. They are trying to land this season on fumes, but will almost certainly fall short of their desired runway.

And let me repeat -- this Saturday, if KU wins at OSU, Baylor wins at KSU and TCU wins against TT in Fort Worth, there can be a 4 way tie for first in the Big XII at the end of the day.

Seems the two contenders who played last night (TT & Baylor, both at home) were looking ahead to Saturday. Not sure which game was the craziest. On the face, the OSU at TT game was. TT in the driver's seat and OSU at 3-11 going in. So will OSU be spent when KU comes to town on Sat?
The UT at Baylor game was extra crazy given that UT was without their leading scorer (PG Roach - 15 ppg - suspended) and leading rebounder (Osetkowski - 10.2 ppg -7.7 rpg - I don't know why he didn't play). So maybe Baylor was looking ahead to the trip north on Sat.
Strange conference to say the least. The remaining games should be very interesting, given that the last 3 games played have gone to OT - two last night and TCU's loss to WVU in 3 OT's.
