so a game like that is painful. But I always thought this team was so limited, especially without Dok and Silvio, that it would struggle to get to 12-6. I still think that.
However, I was quite annoyed to read Lawson's comment after the game that he came out "lackadaisical". Really? Why? Arguably the most important game of the regular season and you can't get up for it? I just don't get it.
Second thought. I am totally with Senex about Grimes. If there ever was a more overrated player coming into KU, I don't remember him.
So why continue to start him and give him so many minutes? No clue. Maybe Self doesn't want him to transfer or maybe he still holds out hope he will become another Malik Newman. Whatever the reason, the kid is getting playing time he doesn't deserve.
Now the question. Why does Self continue to emphasize protecting the paint at the expense of leaving open 3 point shooters? His hedging style has been attacked successfully many times this year. Forcing the action outside may have been a good strategy years ago when teams didn't shoot threes so well, but it seems old fashioned and often unsuccessful now. Granted Tech (and Nova of course last year) shot very well, but many of them were good, open looks. I don't notice other teams doing it nearly as much. So why continue to do it? I'm sure Self has forgotten more basketball than I will ever know, but this season some things he has done (Grimes, defense) don't make much sense to me.

oh no, Selby didn't meet expectations either, but he was better than Grimes. Plus didn't he hurt his foot?

Comparing Grimes to Selby is absurd. Selby was suspended for 9 games then hurt his foot. He played in 26 games and if you compare his stats to Grime's stats, Selby was significantly better in all areas of the game. Selby would have developed into a really good player if he had stayed for even one more year, but he didn't, and that pretty much ended his career. Grimes does nothing well, and given his lack of quickness and overall athleticism, I don't foresee much improvement over the next 12 months.
