Jack Reacher books by Lee Child (and shrimp boy Tom Cruise is NO Jack Reacher)

Just started “the President is Missing”.

I have to wait my turn on the library holds.....

WSG - Hahaha!!! I, too, was amused (appalled) at the choice of Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher. Enjoyed the books, though.

Ms Lady....

You and I must be Jack Reacher soul sisters. I saw Lee Child years ago on Sunday Morning or maybe 60 Minutes and thought I’d give Jack Reacher a whirl.

Read them all in order (I’m a dork that way) and NOTE MY CALENDAR as to when the next one may be released.......if the past holds true, around November.

Aye yi yi.....waaaaaaaay TMI!!!!!

HA!! I'm 100000% behind you on the Jack Reacher stuff. Sadly, I think Tom Cruise bought the rights to the whole series, so we're stuck with him.

Jack Reacher (the character) walks into a room and everyone is instantly intimidated because he's so big. Tom Cruise walks into a room and nobody notices, and certainly nobody is intimidated. Worst casting decision ever. It's like casting Shaquille O'Neil as a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz.

Cruise as Reacher -- even without having read the books, just the synopses, as I saw the first film and was curious -- is just not right for the role.

Corpus -- if you haven't yet, check out Robert Parker's "Jesse Stone" books and the made for TV movies starring Tom Selleck as Jesse. While Selleck (like Cruise with Reacher) is nowhere near the physical description of Stone, he is otherwise the embodiment of the character brought to life (according to none other than Robert Parker himself, may he rest in peace).

Also of note, imagine hard-boiled film noir detective meets JRR Tolkien -- and then pick up Jim Butcher's "Storm Front", the first novel in his "Dresden Files" series about the cases and misadventures of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, the only Consulting Detective/Wizard listed in the Chicago Yellow Pages (or any other Yellow Pages, I would imagine). It's great fun! And if you don't have much time for reading but do a lot of audiobooks (as Anna and I do), check out the Dresden Files audiobooks from your local library. Wonderfully narrated by American actor James Marsters (played English vampire Spike on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Brainiac on the TV show "Smallville", and other -- usually loveable -- miscreants), Anna and I give them our highest recommendations. We just love Marsters narration of these first person told stories. IMHO, Jim Butcher of Independence MO is the best writer to come from Missourah since Samuel Clemens.

If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes but have already gone through all the original canon by Sir ACD, we highly recommend Laurie King's Mary Russell series of historical mysteries, featuring Sherlock Holmes as Mary's mentor and later partner. Start with "The Beekeeper's Apprentice", which, told from the perspective of Ms. Russell, starts with Holmes in his later years, retired to Sussex and his bees, and goes on from there. Great fun!

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"

This thread is such fun!

I only wish CJ’s tongue in cheek comment had sprung from a GIVING Jayhawk blowout, not a receiving one!

My wife has read all of Lee Childs stuff. I have yet to read any. I picked up "Alive" which I have been meaning to read for years. And if you are into survival type books such as "Alive" I highly recommend "The Raft" and also "We Die Alone". "The Raft" is sort of like "Unbroken" only it is about being stranded on a raft in the South Pacific for 36 days in WWII. Thanks for the recommendations HE. I will get those books. They sound like something right up my alley. Since I didn't read the books, I was okay with Cruise as Reacher.

Just something about Jack Reacher that some of us ladies like!

And Jack Reacher books are not “chick lit”

(Sigh)

For as much as I like the character, I’ve never seen a movie, never will.
