So sluggish out of the break...slogging along...and then WHAM.
Just when I’d about concluded this team is almost too exasperating to watch, Lawson and Garrett took over and willed us to victory - with contributions from Dawson and one very big 3 from Vick to break the tie and stem the Cyclones’ momentum.
Garrett has developed a really nice dribble-drive with just enough speed and height and finishing touch to become a good weapon. So glad he’s stopped chucking 3s. I just wish he could hit his FTs since he’s getting many And-1 opportunities.
Nice win. Still think we could get clobbered at Rupp Saturday, but I’ll take any solace after that rip-your-heart-out Chiefs’ loss yesterday.

Aw, shucks, I didn't think anyone would notice the positive energy I channeled to them in the last 10 minutes... oh, you meant Dotson!
Of course we could start calling the brothers Dawson and Kawson. My first thought was that you were concatenating Dedric and Lawson to Dawson, but then I realized my mistake.
Besides, I like D and K, our Men in Blue.
On Garrett he really is making me think of a taller Cedric Hunter now. Great defender, solid to excellent ball handler (not as good as Hunter, but improving all the time as we have seen) and no outside shot but becoming a solid slasher -- but alas, a coin toss from the FT line.
But I will gladly take this new and improved Garrett, and really cheer him on to continue to improve.

Think about it: for the first 30 minutes they looked pretty terrible. Sure Dedric was playing well and Garrett always seems to bring the effort, but we weren't getting any stops on defense. Finally at the 10:00 mark in the 2nd half, we had our little spurt, but we were tied back up with 2 1/2 minutes left.
Three other points:
1.) I love that Dedric is almost a guaranteed double-double every night, but what happens if he has an off night (or worse). Right now we are way to dependent upon him.
2.) Still don't trust Vick. He was 2-6 from 3 last night, but prior to the one he hit at the end, he was 1-5 which isn't good. I was happy he made that last one but I had zero confidence that it was going in when he shot it.
3.) Garrett is for real now. Not that he won't have a bad game going forward, but his offense is now coming up to par with his already good defense.
I'm kind of glad that we get to have a meaningless game against Kentucky this weekend. We need time to find ourselves and for guys like Dotson and Grimes to keep working to improve. The Kentucky game doesn't mean anything, so we'll get a nice little break from conference play to get our heads screwed on right.

There was some nice defense for about 5 minutes , the old stop, score, stop , score ... Then we either got tired or thought we had it.
Both teams played strong free throw defense.

Ochai Agbaji started the second half over Grimes, ISU 42 KU 37.
OA fouled out with 6:32 to go, score KU 63 ISU 55, a 26 to 13 swing.
ISU outscored KU by 4, 21-17 over that last 6:32.
Does OA make that much of a difference to our defense -- and offense?
This one case would indicate "Yes".
