Random offensive thoughts...

Okay maybe not all that offensive, but related to offense.

We have been discussing how Dok can block up the middle and reduce Lawson's effectiveness and that seems to be an issue that will have to be dealt with more and more as defenses stay put and don't follow Dok out like they have to with Lawson. As a result, Dok and Lawson always seem to be playing against an extra man down low. We have all seen it. We all know it. We have all talked about it. Hopefully Self is working on an answer, because it is needed.

But I would like to talk about something else. In OUs game, ASU, and several others our assist level seems to be particularly low. Specially when you consider we are often running small lineups out there filled with guards. I would love to see a comparison between this teams assist to made field goals versus past teams. I am guessing that this team is lower, but that is just the eye test. Part of that is due to one on one play by Vick at times, but overall the assists seem to be down this year which is just another sign of the lack of ball movement we have seen for long stretches in a game.

Just some random thoughts

"Okay maybe not all that offensive"

You can't imagine my disappointment at not living up to the subject line. I was all buckled up for a tourette-syndrome-laced rant of random insults, NSFW commentary. Oh well, maybe next time.

I too noticed that only Garrett seemed to appearing in that column on the stat sheet. One thing that MIGHT be related (if somebody had the stats to back it up) would be how many point we got in transitioned. For example, my feeble memory seems to be filled with visions of Dotson going the length of he court, or slashing to the rim.

Frankly, I'm less concerned with assists since it did seem like we moved the ball effectively and seemed to be able to score. To me the big issue is still the 3 point shooting. I'm sure Iowa State noticed too, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them pack in on defense. If we can't counter by hitting some open 3's to stretch them out, it could be a long night.

You are right about the the lack of offense in both your post and the Hawks this year. I think the big thing as you point out is the lack of ability to hit the open jumper. You move the ball and get it to an open player behind the 3 point line and they can't make that shot you do not get an assist. We need the guys to start making the open 3s. I think it is contagious and once it starts we can keep it going.

I think the key is Lawson hitting a 12-15 ft jumper. He's very effective from down low (when Dok isn't there), but has been erratic from 7 feet and out. I haven't seen a consistent jump shot.

If he becomes effective from 12 feet, then he either scores 25 if they stay on Dok, or he opens up Dok for easy dunks.

And, of course, someone has to hit a three now and then to give both Lawson and Dok some breathing room.

hairyhawk - true if you don't hit the jumper you don't get the assist.

NotO - not hitting the three is indeed is making the offense struggle

AZ that midrange is no longer part of basketball it seems. But it would sure be nice to see again.

Here is sort of what I was thinking. We are often playing four smalls and one big, because of foul trouble, injury, or just to get the offense from bogging down. In that case we have four guards out there and what Self has called the best passer he has ever coached. Yet we don't have a very good assist rate.

Even with Dok, we have guards who are good passers and we have, again, the best passer out there. Yet we don't have a good assist rate.

Is that partly due to the lack of hitting shots? Sure. But it seems to indicate more to me. Just not certain what.

And for you NotO... those ritsam ratsom sons of flagulm blartz $%#^^$# !!!!!!! ;-)
