If he isn't cleared, in my opinion, to start conference play I don't see him playing at all this year. I think an 11 game suspension for $2500 in impermissible benefits is more than enough. If Wednesday comes and goes without De Sousa I don't think he plays ever again at KU.

replay, I'm with you up to the highlighted phrase. If he does not play this year and never gets cleared, he's obviously done at KU. But if by the end of the season the NCAA okays him for subsequent years, then SDS will have a decision to make. Not having played a year will have hurt his stock, so this year's NBA draft will almost certainly be out of the picture for him. Overseas would be an option (and not as big as drawback as it would be for US players), but staying for his junior season could let him play his way into the NBA first round (yes, based on what we saw last season I think he is that talented).

I think the $2500 will be readily resolved and won't affect his long term eligibility after this season. The question will become if there is anything concrete on the $60K his guardian supposedly got from a Maryland booster. From everything I've read it's all hearsay at this point. Frankly, even if they had solid evidence that the guardian got the $, since SDS did not choose Maryland I think the argument can be made that his guardian had no influence on his choice. And as there is (TTBOMK) no evidence that he or his family ever benefited from the $$, a good attorney can make the case that in the spirit of the NCAA regs SDS should not be punished for his guardian's greed.

Personally I will keep my hopes up that we will see him play for KU again, hopefully this season, but next season would be great as well.

Technically, if he does not play this year, he may take that as a red-shirt year. Therefore, next year he would be a sophomore.

I suspect the NCAA will never "bless" him and with the consequences of the criminal trials looming at the end of this season KU will not risk giving the NCAA a reason to burn us.

If he stick around he gets practice and training and may not have a better used for the ride than a quality practice player.

Next year Europe or G League?

I try to be a "cup is half full" guy, but I'm not optimistic.

I sadly predict that just like Preston we'll be getting an announcement in the upcoming weeks that he's signed with some Euro-league team and will be leaving.

The NCAA moves way too slow on these things, and I personally think that the $2500 isn't the only problem. The $60k will be pretty easy to verify and I don't think it matters that KU benefited or not. If the $60k can be even remotely verified, the fact will remain that DeSousa's guardian leveraged DeSousa's stock to benefit himself. Whether it was a KU booster's or Maryland booster's money is kind of irrelevant.

Frankly, I think the NCAA intentionally drags their feet on this stuff in order to get kids to bail and solve the problem without having to intervene.

Hope I'm wrong, but I kind of feel like we've been down this road before.
