"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
Tonight I was really hoping that Grimes would really get going. He obviously didn't. He did look to be trying pretty hard, and was playing decent defense. Nevertheless he lost his guy on a couple switches and still really didn't break through on offense. I do think he's close.
I think the team overall wasn't aware that the game started at 7pm because they didn't show up until around 8. The maddening play continues.
There was good news, however. Going into tonight, we had 2 guys pulling most of the weight: D. Lawson and (usually) Vick. What we saw tonight gives me a lot of confidence going forward.
Dotson is crazy fast. We were spoiled having Frank and Devonte for the past several years. Dotson is a different guy, but man is he quick.
Moore found his shot. He still looks like he's a middle school student, so maybe we can get 10 years of eligibility out of him. Nevertheless, he's now officially a "threat".
McCormack is a hoot. He's clearly a guy who understands that giving 100% every time will get you more time on the court and less time sitting. He's still a work in progress, but any kid who wants it that bad and is willing to work for it while maintaining humility and a "team" mindset is my kind of guy.
Going into this game, we had 2 scorers, and good defense, with maybe one or two guys filling in with a handful of points. After today, I think we can officially count Dotson, Moore and McCormack to the offensive mix.
Grimes will get there, it's just a matter of when. Dok will heal and give us a whole 'nuther look again. Garrett is still a defense-first guy.
Of our starting 5, Vick, Dotson, and Lawson are scorers. Garrett is there for D. Grimes...sigh....not there yet. Nevertheless, 4 of the 5 pieces are sorted out (and it could be 5 of 5 if Dok returned).
KJ still looks lost. Garrett Luinstra is gonna be fun.

That is what I heard on the radio broadcast. Hopefully the defense can keep improving, I agree with you that Grimes will get it before too long.

Much sloppier defensively than vs. Villanova. They ran the same backdoor play several times and burned us each time. On TV, Piper sounded like he was ready to jump across the desk, find his old uniform, and show the guys how it's done.

Piper was beside himself with frustration at the repetitive failure to defend the backdoor cuts. He practically guaranteed the audience that there will be practice hell to pay leading up to the trip to Tempe... and I’m sure it’s a fair projection that we in the audience were all in agreement with Pipe.
