As we all are probably aware, we are tied with Gonzaga with 11 straight con championships and UCLA is next with 13. I'm curious, what competition did those teams face during their streaks? The West Coast Conf (Gonzaga) isn't exactly a powerhouse (LMU had some success during the Hank Gathers/Bo Kimble years). In other words, in terms of RPI or SOS, how does KU's streak compare to theirs?

USAF, winning 11 in a row is always an amazing feat. But consider this. As of right now, the probability of the Jayhawks winning at least a share of the Big 12 title is 42%. If this was about the same every year then the probability of winning 11 in a row is 70 in 1 million. That makes what KU has done pretty incredible. Now the Zags as of before conference season (they have already played a couple conference games) had a 62% probability of at least sharing the conference title. If this is a typical year then their odds of winning 11 in a row would be 5203 in 1 million or about 74 times more likely. My guess is that UCLA's odds in the PAC 8 were even better that the Zags. No matter how you slice it, KU's streak of 11 Big 12 conference titles is THE MOST IMPRESSIVE streak in college sports or any other sport.

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!

Now that it looks like we have a good shot at Big XII Title #XII, I did my own research to compare KU's current streak with UCLA's "Gold Standard".

Basically, the competition simply doesn't compare. Note that UCLA did not share any titles...I bet if we win #13 the west coasters will raise that up. Also note that (I believe) that the AP only ranked 20 teams back then.

Numbers in () are end-of-year (pre tourney) AP rankings
Numbers in [] are highest AP rankings [but fell out before the season ended]
(I've not included this years because the EOY rankings aren't in yet...but we all know this has been the most fiercely competitive year yet)

This is phenomenal stuff, USAFJay...

And it just further punctuates the monumental nature of our run.

Thanks so much for doing all the research and posting this!

Nice work, USAFJay. Don't forget to include last year and after Saturday (I DO believe in Jayhawks, I do, I do, I DO!) this year to complete the picture. Thanks for the research!

Can't seem to edit original post, this one updated to include last year (Not sure how I missed that)

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to compile this. Very impressive. Given your numbers I did a quick statistical eval and estimated the odds of UCLA winning in an average year would be about 65% (which was my oiriginal guess. The probability of winning 13 in a row is 3700 in 1 million. I think the the average probability of KU winning every year is no more than 40%. The odds of winning 12 in a row would be 17 in 1 million. So KU's streak is already almost 200 times more improbable. Listen, no matter how you slice it thse KU streak is one of the most impressive feats in sports. Think of the hurdles to overcome. Three times lost all 5 starters. Many injuries to key players. The Big 12 is consistently a top 3 conference and the last three years running the top conference. Just amazing.

It is just amazing... and I have a small nitpick (yeah, I'm gonna be *that* guy).

KU replaced all 5 starters 3 times, but lost all 5 starters only twice.

Christian Moody was a starter 2004-05 as a junior. Miles, Langford, Simien and Giddens left afterwards.
Christian returned for 2005-06, but Julian Wright replaced him in the starting lineup (and didn't Darnell ended up being first in the rotation off the bench?).

It's a fine point, but it's a significant one. Even in this day of one and done, Bill usually has players-in-development ready to step up next year -- and if he doesn't, he usually succeeds in his quests to get them.
