Fouls play much too important a role in college hoops

I hate when anyone complains about the refs after losing a game. The refs rarely make one or two calls that influence the outcome. But they sure influence the flow of the game and how enjoyable it is to watch. Last night was awful. Both teams got hit with many tick tack fouls that could easily have been ignored, and didn't need to be called to ensure fair play.

1. Why does the NCAA feel they have to start every season with new "points of emphasis" and then make the refs call games so tight until the guys learn how to play to the new points of emphasis? Is the game so in need of change that they create new rules every year? Not in my opinion. What we get is a horrific slew of calls, mostly on the bigs, that chops up any game flow.

2. Why do we need to reduce a big's ability to move his defender up the lane to get in position for a lob entry pass? A new "point of emphasis this year" Most analysts point out how great a skill that is, and that the dominant bigs are the ones who master that. Was that ruining the game last year? Not at all. But this year they want to eliminate that. Why?? It now just leads to fouls that no one sees and takes bigs out of the game.

2. NCAA should go to six fouls. Bigs struggle the most to mature and learn the inside game where physical play is so dominant. It takes a solid year or two for them to master getting position, getting good footwork to gets shots off, blocking shots, rebounding, etc. without fouling. Five fouls guarantees that most bigs sit out a block of the first half, and then another block when they get their third foul early in the second half. Good coaches will attack the other team's big until they get a couple fouls, knowing they will sit for long periods like Dok seems to do.

Let the players play, and let the refs fade into the background. Please.

One of the changes that SHOULD have happened this year is for goaltending to be a reviewable play. The refs blew TWO goaltending calls last night, both by Tenn, one blatantly obvious defensive no call that cost KU at least a tie at halftime (and really changed the flow of the game) and the other offensive that cost Tenn two points in the second half. One game, two classic examples of how refs bungle the call.

You're right. The offensive call was tough, but was wrong. Can't understand at all how they missed the defensive call with the rim pull down. That was so obvious.

Did you see Self tell the ref "you're full of s**t" after they missed that call? I think the ref knew they blew it and let self get away without a T.

I think the entire TV audience got that one. Didn’t need to be expert lip readers to figure that one out. And Anna and I agreed — either the ref didn’t hear it, or he ignored it cause he knew they blew it.

Saving grace in reality, as the FTs & possession that would have gone with such a T would have been back breakers. Self was very, very lucky.
