Redshirt him.
If the NCAA lowers the boom on him, he can always go to the D-League or Europe.
The redshirt is an insurance policy. Here's how it works out (as I see it).
The NCAA is either going to kick him out of college hoops or they won't.
- If they do boot him, redshirting doesn't matter, he goes to the D-League or Europe and moves on.
- If they allow him to play, he's going to miss somewhere between "a few" and "many" games.
-If he misses "a few" (say 5) games, but the NCAA drags their feet until early 2019 to decide, it'll be hard to incorporate him into the system at that point. Better to go into next season knowing when we'll get him back and working around that.
-If he misses "a lot" then he's going to be useless this season anyway. At that point, he'll probably leave anyway (sitting 2 seasons in a row doesn't help one's draft stock).
There's nothing to lose by redshirting him. If he leaves before his eligibility is gone, it's irrelevant. If you redshirt him, you can make sure he's covered if he comes back and actually NEEDS all 4 years to be ready (through games that he's forced to miss out on, injury or other issues).
The REAL question is do you tell him to hang 'em up for the year at this point or not. I say do it. We don't NEED him at this point, and I doubt we'll get word from the NCAA in time for it to matter.
