Just for some fun I thought I would give some stats on the 353 Div 1 college nicknames.

I broke the nicknames into 6 broad categories. They breakdown as follows;

Animals -- 220
Color -- 8
Cultural -- 103
Devils -- 7
Nature -- 11
Other -- 4

The single most common names are
Bulldogs -- 15
Tigers -- 13
Eagles -- 10
Wildcats -- 10
Bears -- 7
Panthers -- 7
Cougars -- 6
Spartans -- 5
Aggies -- 5
Huskies -- 5

Breaking the General category into sub categories

Animals
Birds -- 62
Cats -- 59
Other Animal -- 30
Dogs -- 29
Bovine -- 11
Horses -- 10
Wolves -- 6

Cultural
State Specific -- 26
Occupational -- 25
Historical Other -- 20
Historical American -- 11
Pirates -- 7
Indian -- 7
Cowboys -- 5
School Specific -- 2

Nature
Weather -- 8
Trees -- 3

I guess I was surprised that there were more birds than cats.

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!

I LOVE this kind of trivia!!!

BTW: Did our beloved Jayhawk count as an animal or other (i.e., mythical versus real)? Also, how many institutions have a secondary mascot (e.g., Baby Jay)?

Killin' time baby, killin' time . . .

Almost everyone dreams of flying. :)
