According to this old article he’s a sportswriter wannabe that isn’t afraid to lie for a story, and still gets his facts wrong when he is caught and tries to explain himself.
patskrieg.com/2015/01/20/how-sports-illu...-about-the-patriots/
I will note that he does not have his facts right in his KU story either. No evidence or testimony was introduced showing that Self knew anything specific about any moneys, let alone that he requested or approved such payments. In his closing statement the defense attorney made several statements that were inferences, but were not presented as testimony or evidence during the trial. Fellow apparently does not under the difference, or that the defense in closing will say whatever it can get away with to help create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.
Unfortunately the writer does still have his bully pulpit from which to pontificate.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"

Ethically, he's actually right. De Sousa gets benched, and Self/Townsend/KU keep chugging along with paychecks being deposited on schedule.
But the author would have more credibility if he also called for Zion and Coach K to be suspended until they determine if Nike paid Zion's family, or if Duke arranged for a family job and house. The author should suspend himself for not writing this article earlier, but instead waiting until the FBI exposed the facts. Why didn't he dig for the facts or write an opinion on the state of college sports before now? I'm sure he knew or suspected something was going on.
And I should suspend myself from watching four KU games because I supported the team, bought and wore KU gear, and bragged to my KY and UNC friends when we went to the finals last year with Silvio playing a major role, while I fully suspected and accepted the shoe company payment plan for players.
My drumbeat goes on - acknowledge the past with no suspensions or penalties, create a system within the next two years where players participate in the billion dollar college sports industry, and until that is created, move forward with a zero tolerance policy, including a requirement that coaches report any player, parent or guardian who even hints of wanting improper payments or getting anything from schools or shoe companies. Put those players on a "do not touch" list so they don't make it into the college system, which puts some degree of culpability on the parents/guardians to keep their fingers out of the pie until the NCAA creates a payment system. Give coaches the out to report under the table payments or demands, but hammer any coach who doesn't abide.

"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
KU is loaded this year and ranked #1 in the preseason polls, so we're a magnet for critics.
It's impossible to prove that Self knew anything about DeSousa's payments, just like Townsend's wiretap lacks context to prove anything. We've all been in situations where we'd "go along with what's being said" as a way to get out of a conversation and move on rather than start an argument.
Why isn't this guy including Maryland in this article, when there was allegedly $60k changing hands there? Maybe it's because Turgeon's team isn't ranked in the top 25.
