"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"
Having read all I can find on this topic, I don’t think De Sousa or KU is at risk.
Taking money to attend a specific program is an NCAA violation, and since the Cam Newton affair, it doesn’t matter if the student-athlete took the $ personally, or if it was a family member or guardian who took $ without the S-A’s knowledge.
So assume the worst case, that the guardian took the $20K to direct Silvio to Maryland, then blew it so fast that he had to get $ from Adidas to repay Under Armor when Silvio was adamant about attending KU and not Maryland.
If Silvio knew about the money, why would he insist on attending KU instead of Maryland?
Note that regardless of how the above question is answered, it is clear that the underlying reality is that despite the guardian taking anything from anybody, Silvio went where he wanted to go.
Allowing for that, the NCAA would have an extremely difficult time making a case that Silvio was ineligible because he — or anyone close to him — took money to influence him to attend KU. Maryland is a totally different story, and if he had gone there that program would be in trouble.
But *everything* made public to date indicates that Silvio choose KU because that was where he wanted to go.
Yeah, I know, we’re talking about the NCAA here, but if they don’t have the stomach to rule that fake classes constitute an NCAA violation, I don’t think they’ll have the stomach to fry a student athlete who did nothing wrong. The subsequent lawsuit would not go well, and I think their attorneys would make sure they understood that.

Are these authors Missouri grads? This just doesn't seem newsworthy.

It’s not newsworthy. What it is is tigger Forde working with his buddies Wetzel (UMass) and Thamel (Syracuse) trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
Forde has a loooooooooonnnnnnngggg history of writing up any negative KU news he can, and going all innuendo and wink-wink when he can’t find any real news to write about.

Thanks for the info, HE. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember Forde being a Missouri grad.
