No one can argue that Villanova is on a sweet run. They have won 2 NC
s in the last 3 years. As for polling, they have been in the top 25 in 90 straight polls. They certainly topped the 2018 polls. Here are the top 4 (25 points for 1st, 24 points for 2nd, etc.)

Nova -- 397
Michigan St. -- 383
Duke -- 367
Kansas -- 317
Xavier -- 289

If we do 2017 and 2018 Villanova is still the king.

Nova -- 858
Kansas -- 754
Duke -- 675
Gonzaga -- 622
North Carolina -- 591
Kentucky -- 536

Let's do the last 3 years.
Nova -- 1212
Kansas -- 1194
North Carolina -- 985
Duke -- 892
Virginia -- 864
Kentucky -- 813
Michigan St. -- 724

How about 4 years? Villanova is still the king? Incidentally, only Villanova, Kansas and North Carolina have been in every poll over the last 4 years.
Nova -- 1574
Kansas -- 1512
Duke -- 1322
Kentucky -- 1288
Virginia -- 1276
North Carolina -- 1198

Heck, let's look at the last 5 year. Jeez, Villanova still reigns supreme even though they were not in out of the top 25 in 4 weeks in 2013-14.
Nova -- 1868
Kansas -- 1846
Duke -- 1657
Arizona -- 1564
Kentucky -- 1537
Virginia -- 1384
North Carolina -- 1309

Might as well go to 6 years. Wow, Villanova falls to 4th. Look who's on top.
Kansas -- 2228
Duke -- 2110
Arizona -- 1894
Nova -- 1868
Kentucky -- 1620
Louisville -- 1562

KU is on top using last 7, 8 and 9 years. Duke goes to the top using 10 years but Villanova is a respectable 4th, albeit pretty far back. Here is 10 years.
Duke -- 3686
Kansas -- 3531
Kentucky -- 2750
Nova -- 2710
North Carolina -- 2519
Michigan St. -- 2393

Oh, and remember I mentioned that Villanova has been in 90 straight AP top 25 polls? Well Kansas has been in 178 straight!! There is no taking away that Villanova has been the cream of the NCAA crop the last 5 years. But Kansas has been amazingly consistently excellent. Self just needs to win another NC and preferably next year.!!

If we were so fortunate as to witness our Jayhawks win another NC next year it would put Self ahead of or tied with the best of past KU coaches for almost every meaningful KU coaching record.

2 NCAA titles (1 each Phog, Williams; would still trail Phog in total NCs when 1922 and 1923 Helms NCs are included)
4 Final Fours (T/Williams)
.500 Final Four winning % (T/Brown)
.823 winning % (in 2nd Williams @ .805)
447 KU wins (2nd to Phog’s 590)
14 conference championships (2nd to Phog’s 24)
14 consecutive conference titles (in 2nd Phog’s 6 from 1921-22 thru 1926-27 seasons)

Even now, after this season, the argument can be made that Self is at least on the same level as Phog for best coach in KU history.

Of course no one can ever take the crown from Phog due to all his other accomplishments.

I can, however, foresee a day in the future when, after the most recent upgrades to the venerable Old Barn, KU students will still cheer for their Jayhawks in The Phog, but one formally rechristened Self-Allen Fieldhouse.

From a pure metric standpoint your point is legit. The bigger issues with Phog (as you allude) are things like

-- Innovations to the game
-- Coaching tree
-- Olympic impact

There are probably a few more. I sure would like to see Bill stay another 15 years, win 3 more NC's, 6-8 more Final Fours and win 1000+ games before Lightfoot takes over and coaches for 35 years breaking Coach K's all time wins record.
