Think Reaching the Final 4 Is Tough? Then You Haven't Met Kansas' Udoka Azubuike

""I'm sorry," he says. "I don't really like to talk about my past."

And for nearly two years at Kansas, Azubuike hasn't.

Not to the reporters who pepper the NBA prospect about his background. Not to the KU teammates who will play alongside the 280-pounder in this weekend's Final Four. Not even to coach Bill Self and his assistants. Azubuike occasionally reveals bits and pieces about his childhood, they say, but the majority of the details have remained private.

Until now."

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I was choked up earlier thinking about Dok and his mom getting reunited for the game after 5 years, but now hearing these details it's an even bigger deal.

Sports are fun. I'm a fan. But it's all just entertainment unless it's your job.

Dok's story is LIFE. It's great that sports have provided a way for him to find a better life and probably provide one for his mom and family. Nevertheless, I just can't get over the fact that he's just an 18 year old kid, albeit living in a giant body.

So happy for him and his family. After so much heartbreak and adversity, I sincerely hope that he signs a gazillion dollar NBA contract, provides for his family and somehow is able to overcome his troubled past. Money won't buy him happiness, but money and success can help him help his family and I'm so proud to have him as a fellow Jayhawk.

After reading this story, I can see why he was named to 2nd Team Academic All B12. I am sure his mother being a Teacher did not hurt. Here is a perfect example of a young kid seizing the opportunities and to his guardians to provide the environment to thrive and be the best he can.

I was not aware of the connection with Joel. Great article.

This is truly is a fantastic article. A must-read for any all Jayhawk fans. Go Dok! I'm so happy his mom gets to watch him play for at least one, and hopefully two, games.
