Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
A couple notable stats.
-- With Malik in the game KU was outscored by 18!! That's right, you read that correctly. In his 14.6 minutes we were outscored by more than a point per minute. Unbelievable.
-- With Devonte' on the bench we were outscored by 9 points in 2.4 minutes. This is a season trend. On the season KU has been outscored by 34 with Devonte' on the bench. His delta is an astronomical 1.1 (meaning KU has a scoring margin of 1.1 points per minute less with him on the bench than with him in the game. Last season Frank Mason had the highest and it was 0.3. Depth in the frontcourt is our biggest problem but depth at point guard is our most dramatic.
Best Offense (KU points per minute): Azubuike by a mile
Worst Offense: Newman by a mile
Best Defense (Opponents points per minute): Lightfoot by a mile
Worst Defense: Newman by a mile (but Cunliffe and Azubuike are honorable mentions)
Most Effective Player (highest plus minus per minute): Vick but Graham is right there.
Most Critical Player (highest delta meaning his replacement is the biggest drop off): Graham by a million miles

Early in the year I wondered if we would be better off with one-dimensional Conner Frankamp or Malik. Now the answer is clear. Malik is getting worse and Conner throws in a handful of 3's each game. Imagine Conner coming in to shoot a few 3's when Graham needed a little rest. Or would he have graduated last year if he hadn't transferred. Oh well, wishing for SOMETHING better than what Malik is giving us. He has the record for drives to the basket where he doesn't get fouled, doesn't make the shot, gets it blocked, or isn't even able to get a shot off. Sigh.

Agree, Malik hasn't looked good at all, and if anything he seems like he's regressing. Meanwhile not only has he been replaced in the starting lineup by Garrett, but I see Sam Cunliffe moving past him in the rotation based on the numbers.
Two things to note from this:
1.) just because you were a decent player elsewhere doesn't mean that you'll be a good fit into Self's system (or that there won't be an adjustment period while you re-learn systems).
2.) consider this as a cautionary tale for ANY kid coming in. Most notably, DeSousa and even Preston have yet to be tested under the Self system in actual games.
Hoping for the best.
