Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
Rebounding: This team has been a mediocre rebounding team. Mostly the 30.1% of offensive rebounding has been poor. The goal is at least 35% of offensive rebounds. With a perimeter oriented team this is somewhat understandable. We need to step this up in Big 12 play. Last season we were an average rebounding team and a little short of goal on the defensive boards.
Shooting: If we can continue shooting at the pace we have thus far this team will be okay. Our 52.3% FG% would be the best since the Mark Randall ear in 1990. The 59.4% on 2 pointers is better than any previous KU team. Anything over 40% on 3 pointers is good an we are at 41.5% which would be the 2nd best under Self to the 2016 team.
Shot Selection: I think we all have sensed this team has shot more threes than normal. Actually it is not that close. This team has attempted 39.8% of all shots from the arc. In Self's first 12 years KU average taking 29.4% of shots from the arc. This is a 1/3rd increase this season. Last season we shot about 36% from the arc. Perhaps the most stark of all stats is the 0.8% of points scored from FT's. The average for the first 14 years under Self is 20.3%. This is a massive deviation.
Ball Handling: As a perimeter oriented team we should be pretty good at ball handling and thus far we have been very good. We have had the ball stolen on 8% of possessionswhich would easily be the best of any Self team and actually the best ever. We turnover the ball on 16.5% of possessions which again is the best on record. And our 1.66 assist to TO ration is far and away the best. Let's hope these stay in this range in Big 12 play.
Defense: A lot has been made of the defense (or lack thereof) of this team. It has not been a great defensive team and it has been below average. In Self's first 10 years under Self the Jayhawks allowed FG% efficiency of 43.5%. This season we are at 45.4% and for the last 5 seasons we have averaged 46.2% Our defense has been quite a bit poorer since we started getting more one and dones.
Possessions: In Self's first 10 seasons the Jayhawks gave up .91 points per possession. In the next 4 we gave up 0.99. That is a huge difference. This season we are back down at 0.906. I hope we can keep that. That is a decent rate. Our offense has been crazy good this season but again, that will change in Big 12 play. Let's hope we can keep it close.
