Seriously impressed with the intensity level from every Jayhawk in this game so far.

Can we get Frank in the stands for every NCAAT game?

Wow!

We came out with a lot of fire. We faded a bit in the 2nd half. I think some of that was we were not making our shots in the 2nd half and I thought it affected our intensity but maybe it was the other way around. We were not as focus and that affected our shot.

How can anyone not love Frank?!? Great to see him there, and even better that they had him on the air during the first half. Liked how they called him out for not being impartial too. Great guy, and I'm thrilled that he seems to be doing well in the NBA.

Frank: "I didn't know I was a commentator!"

You weren't, Frank. You were an 8 minute (or so it seemed! :) ) commercial for KU!

You keep on cheering, #BIFM!

Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!

I think the defensive intensity was consistently HIGH throughout the game, and that impacted the O in the second half. Still, after staking themselves to the big lead in the first, they finished by outscoring Stanford in the 2nd half 28-25.

Note that the 54 points scored by Stanford is the fewest opponent points scored so far this year.

Road game (okay, a neutral site, but just 126 miles away from Palo Alto), late game (even for West Coast standards), before the winter holiday break -- all sorts of reasons for KU to play poorly and yet Self can have no complaints about their intensity level in this game (some points about execution, sure, but not intensity, they brought it all game).

If you were like me -- I was so stoked after that first half, and anything less than a repeat of that was going to be a bit of a let down. Still, even with the scoring drought in H2, they never let The Cardinal get closer than 14, and finished the last 4 1/2 minutes of the game on an 11-5 run. (See the Game Flow chart just below the summary story on this ESPN page.)

But the team definitely lost its shooting touch all around in the second half.
KU shooting %
FG % 1st Half: 20-32 62.5% 2nd half: 12-29 41.4% Game: 32-61 52.5%
3FG% 1st Half: 6-13 46.2% 2nd half: 0-5 0.0% Game: 6-18 33.3%
FT % 1st Half: 1-1 100.0% 2nd half: 4-9 44.4% Game: 5-10 50.0%

But still -- a dominating road win against a Power 5 team beginning the winter holiday break is always a nice way to celebrate the winter solstice.:woohoo:

A few observations from a dedicated Jayhawk for life who knows little about Xs & Os from the KU at (sort of) Stanford game:

Thursday night was cold by NorCal standards but nothing compared to the Midwest! Walking from the Grand Sheraton Hotel -- where Stanford stayed and, by service staff reports, were very well behaved (cf., Jerod Jayhawk Haas) -- Cal Bear wife (CBW) and I noticed one homeless person per block sleeping in doorways. Careful where you step, but not as bad as San Francisco.
The new Golden One Credit Union Arena is spectacular! Although it looks like someone put a basketball court in the middle of a mall with numerous food courts, bars, and shops. Speaking of bars, a big beer and double whiskey cost $47 USD! Very easy to get into the place. Security was conspicuous and helpful. All in all, a real nice venue with an NBA feel to it. :)
The place was almost half full with at least 70% crimson and blue multi-generation KU fans. It’s always fun to see little kids sporting KU wear and showing their spirit! Even though alcohol was involved everyone was well behaved and we didn’t see any trouble. Leaving after the game was orderly and efficient. I look forward to going again (but I’ll have to smuggle in a non-metal flask!)
My only complaint about the place was the sound system. Having just had my hearing checked (post-sixty hearing loss) I didn’t need the POUNDING bass and distorted noise that passed as “music” from the live DJ “in the house.” Maybe the kids like it, but I didn’t. Stanford’s pregame video was simply a slide show of their players. KU had a road version of the really cool video played in the barn; not as long, but replete with the history of KU.
The first few minutes of the game showed HCBS’s game plan. Throw it to Udunkie and he’ll stuff it in the hoop. Stanford replied with several threes and for just a couple of minutes I had a “Here it goes again” feeling, but it didn’t last. I haven’t attended a game in person for a few years, so I forgot that it’s like attending a rock concert versus listening to your sound system at home. Instead of the BIFM interview we got “mistletoe” cam, bongo cam, kiss cam, dance cam, and the like during time outs. Again, the little kids were a treat.
CBW and I had pretty darn good seats, but I don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. On top of it, there was a GINORMOUS wide screen monitor the size of a drive-in movie screen (remember those?) above the playing floor. It was good for replays, but I found it distracting because I came to see a live game and I kept watching the monitor.
Half-time antics included a half-court shot contest that included BIFM. He missed (as did the others) until they moved to just above the top of the key. Then Frank drained a textbook swish. A thing of beauty to behold. B)
Speaking of Frank, he sat across from the bench/press box side of the court with who I’m guessing are some family members. I never saw him acknowledge the standing O he received from the adoring KU crowd, but maybe I missed it because I was clapping and screaming at the top of my lungs. CBW commented on how well trained the NBA players must be dealing with fans. I’ll watch Frank’s interview on the DVR later.
Others have commented on the play execution and game strategy so I’ll skip it. I just wanted to give my esteemed RCZ members this Jayhawk’s report of what was – for me – a very special occasion. Appropriate seasonal greetings to you all,

RC

His interview was great and I like how it was still connected to the game (as opposed to when they drone on about something unrelated). Also, Frank seemed a bit more outspoken and comfortable in front of the camera compared to how I remember him during his time at KU. Just an observation....

Maye someday many years from now Frank will come back to begin climbing the Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU Coaching Tree!!!

One of my favorite parts of this game came with about 2 minutes to go coming back from break for a freethrow...they showed a close up of the crowd with KU & Stanford fans sitting kind of mixed together...all laughing and smiling and enjoying the game together...to me that's part of what being a good KU sports fan is all about Charlie Brown!!! :)

Love the "cheeks in the seats, I was THERE" report, My Brutha!

So envious. TV looked like lots of Crimson and Blue fans.

Who ever thought one of us would complain about missing TV "commentary"...... You will very much enjoy the 8 minute KU commercial delivered by Frank. Someone else said...he sounded so relaxed and just chatted away....although I "think" he wanted to watch the action. I'll bet our "CB sister" is correct......being interviewed 4 times a week after a game and maybe more as part of the NBA....may be helping him be comfortable with a mic shoved in front of him.

So glad you got to go!!!! Thank you for the report.

BTW.....glad to hear there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in that arena. As I mentioned I'm hoping to snag a ticket in early January while "conferencing" in Sacto......so maybe a CHEEP seat (and looking for details on the JUMBOtron) is just the ticket for moi.
